Hi,

I haven't seen a serial port on a computer for years, Mine doesn't have one. So I bought USB -> Serial DB9 cable and installed the drivers/installers on the CD. Restarted the PC (Win 7). Plugged in my HD621 and I find that mconfg.exe can't find the HD621.

Been doing this for three days now. I expect the 143rd attempt will fail too, so I am giving up.

Somebody else must have had this problem ... is there an easy answer?

Cheers, Aidan

Did you select the right port and baud rate?
Does it connect to other RS-232 devices?

Does this cable act as a null modem cable? If not, that's possibly why the HD621 isn't being found. An issue which has caught most of us out at some stage!

cheers

I use startech "pro" adapters e.g. ICUSB2321F and a DB9F->DB9F null modem serial 'crossover' type cable.

Points to note are:

1) For Startech devices - don't bother with the CD in the kit - download the newest drivers from the the startech.com website. N.B. not all serial dongles work with Win 10.
2) The device may appear as COM3 or higher
3) Typical settings will be 9600 kilobaud ; 8 data bits; No-parity, 1 stop bit ( "8N1").

This setup has worked with HP and Microsoft laptops running Win 7 and Win 10 and talking to 568.2MM and G68ADV without problem.

Regards,
Graham

Thanks DonRon, GMS and Mr. Meridian!

I tried most baud rates, I thought 9600 would be OK frown I have no idea if it is acting as a null modem, or how to set the suggested parity bit etc. - please let me know and I will try it.

I used to have a complete 500 Series system, but after a decade or so I went valve, and so the HD621 is the only device I have with an RS232 so I can't do a check with another RS232 fitted device. Sometimes backward compatibility isn't a boon.

It you guys let me know how to set the settings (!) I would be grateful. If that fails I will try Mr. Meridian's suggestion. I'm using Win7.

Who knew HIFI could be so frustrating?

Thanks all, Aidan

Hi DonRon, Mr. Meridian and GMS

Couldn't set the baud rate or whatever, no luck. So took GMS' advice and bought the Startech cables and... as if by magic!

Many Thanks all for your help,
Aidan.

PS Meridian Corp - a niggle.
Each input should be able to choose if audio is included in the HDMI output stream or not. What would that have taken, a few lines of code?
As it is I have had to keep a HDMI cable in place from the SKY box to the TV for my better half to use when she can't be bothered to use the hifi for sound.
I had hope to run everything with one HDMI cable!
