The mm has a MHR input via an HD15 connection.

For multi-channel digital input (i.e. HD621).

Thanks for that info, I'm not sure why I thought it meant it had a phono pre amp blush

So if I just wanted coax in then a 568.2 would do the job? How much price diff between the mm and basic?

Thanks for humouring me,
Regards

Hi,

The 568.2mm will probably cost you about £150 - £200 more than the basic 568.2.
Basic 568.2 is probably £350 - £450 but you might get one for a bit less if you’re lucky.

If you go for the basic .2 version you won’t need a HD621 but you might find that the mm version holds it’s value better than the basic version.

I'm not too bothered about resale value, as I mentioned before I gave my Onkyo 818 that cost £1000 6 years ago away to a charity shop.

What I am interested to find out is why the 568.2 is still so highly priced/rated for something of its age.

Regards

If you are worried about sound quality I wouldn't settle for DD/DTS over SPDIF. A 568.2mm with an HD621 is night and day better than a 568.2mm without a HD621. You may also have the problem of having a 4K HDR TV, that a HD621 can't handle, and then you get into all sorts of fun having the HD621 purely as a device to get MHR out of HDMI and into a 568.2mm or 861.

But for incremental upgrade path, perhaps a 568.2mm with a simple SPDIF audio extractor (like the blusound), would be a good first step. Then add a HD621, with the blusound now splitting the signal to the TV (for 4k HDR) and to the HD621 (for audio). And then perhaps an 861v4 for room correction.

The 568.2mm is still highly rated simply because you can add a HD621 and access the HD audio codecs available from Bluray..

The processor has a analogue centre output that you can connect directly to your power amp.

Your 501 will still have some value, so sell it on the forum classified ads and offset some of the cost of a
568.2mm or a HD621

The 568.2(MM) is highly rated because some think it sounds better than the G68. It also has a linear PSU which probably helps the sonics and almost certainly helps with reliability. The only significant feature it doesn't have vs. the G68 is Meridian Room Correction.

In answer to the 555 running with a single centre speaker - pretty positive you can’t bridge to mono so I think you would only run one channel i.e. left OR right signal, in and out. Not sure that’s the smartest thing to do though and you might want to consider a mono block? 505s are rare I think but the even older 205s do seem to pop up from time to time. Or just run with a phantom centre before making any final decisions.

Re reading your original post room correction seems really quite important as does budget. I’d perhaps look at other separate room correction options which then sit in the final signal path, like a MiniDSP, then tag on a processor. I’ve not tried the MiniDSP; I am playing around with Roons PEQ at the moment and if that is anything to go by, it’s pretty useful. I’ve not had time to use my Dirac option yet....

Not sure of prices for a 501, you could search eBay sold prices as a guide. No bad thing to give away but it is certainly worth something.
