Hi, I've been seeing a pair of 96kHz/24bit DSP6000's on eBay, and the seller is asking right at $7,000. They are supposedly refurbished. This seems rather high, what would be a fair price? I would appreciate opinions from other enthusiasts. Thanks!

Hi Ryan, £2500 here. (Proper 6ks), so I’d say overpriced by a factor of 2.5, depending on 7 or 8 segment.

As DSP6000.2 user, I am also very much interest in current value of my speakers too (serial 5000)
The product in the eBay link however seems to be older version (7 digits display) and all and 7,000 could be exceeding the market value by some margin.. although the sound quality and simplicity of DSP6000 cannot be easily beaten with other speaker-amp-DAC combo valued near 7,000.

Depends what he means by refurbished, really. Let’s say it had a full overhaul including all new caps, load resistors, drivers, by someone who knows what they’re doing like Mark Koval, that’s not cheap.
In normal condition for their age, around £2500-3000, and caveat emptor as drivers are now NLA (apart from tweeters). You need to listen and know what you’re listening, and looking, for.

Average US price for a good set of 24/96 DSP600's that are complete with grilles and top glass ans speaker head fittings is about $2000.00. The ones on eBay at 7 grand a way over priced. If they were dot matrix versions with original boxes and some interesting provenance, well maybe...
Biggest concern with purchasing DSP6000's is logistics. They are a big heavy beast with the front glass being pretty fragile. They must be correctly packed and shipped on a pallet motor freight which can add significant cost to your purchase depending on the distance. Ideally it would be best to go inspect them and collect them yourself. One persons good is anothers trash. Finding a set of truly pristine 6ks is akin to finding a unicorn in the US. Most tend to be far from perfect. Out of dozens I have only ever seen one set that had the gold pinstripe on the head in perfect condition.

They must be correctly packed and shipped on a pallet. Did I do bad by loading them into the back of my car wrapped in a duvet and pillows?

No, I have done that myself. My pallet statement is in reference to third party shipping.

I would be interested to know how many pairs of DSP6000.2's (with dot-matrix displays) were produced, as they seem to be a pretty rare beast!
I'm fortunate to own a pair which are in great condition and sound wonderful.
The normal seven segment ones seem pretty much the norm and would agree that £2000-£2750 is realistically their price point at the moment, depending on age and condition. If they've been serviced, or are the rare .2's then possibly add another £1k.
Cheers,
Steve

Me too, I am pretty sure I know where two pair are and they probably haven't been used in many years.
