With my Oppo I can now do 7.1. I currently have 4 DSP5000s and a DSP5000C.
So ... another pair of DSP5000s or get some DSP3100s?
If DSP3100s, would you make them the surround pair, or the rear pair, in a 7.1 system?

Another pair of DSP5000s, unless you have a really good deal for a pair of DSP3100, then it's another story.

What is a "really good deal" for 3100s? Are they more expensive because they are teeny tiny?

I don't know why, but usually used price for DSP3100s are more than DSP5000s.

It all depends on the room and what part the extra speakers are intended for, for front ideally all the same speakers, the rears and sides not as important for matching speakers, the DSP3100 and the DSP33 are more then adequate for rears and sides and have the benefit of being able to be suspend by brackets from walls or ceilings.
Good deals can be had for the older legacy speakers here or on eBay but yes DSP5000 and the DSP33 are at present cheaper then the 3100's
