It’s a little complicated. Roon device settings refer to endpoint capabilities, not desired outcome. I would say:

- if using the analogue outputs on the 218, set to “Decoder and Renderer”
- if using the digital output on the 218 direct to SE loudspeakers, set to “Decoder and Renderer”
- if using the digital output on the 218 to anything other than SE loudspeakers, set to “Decoder”.

You will not get the MQA light on the 218 if Roon is doing the first MQA decode, or the output from Roon is not bit-perfect to the 218. Any DSP in Roon? Any volume normalization?

Hi,

I see.

I have no speakers directly connected to the 218. The 218 is wired from SP Out slave to G65 SL In. What should the recommended device setting be then?

No DSP or volume normalization.

Amarra4 features MQA pass through. Does Roon not have the same feature?

Of course. If you set the endpoint capabilities to “Decoder” or “Decoder and Renderer”, then Roon will pass through the MQA stream bit-perfectly *unless* you have enabled MQA-compatible DSP in Roon.

In this case (DSP enabled), Roon will decode the MQA, perform the DSP, and — if the Roon endpoint has been set as “Renderer” or “Decoder and Renderer” — add back the “signalling information” needed for rendering.
