+1 re sad news, although for physical media, my favourite shop for a couple of years has been Presto Music, admittedly limited in genre to Classical & (more recently?) Jazz. Presto have a great web site and just one physical store (although I’ve never visited it).

NB I generally only buy when offers are on (fairly frequent).

I posted this in the Roon forum, but it seems 100% appropriate to post it here too. The vast majority of HiFi forum contributors (i.e. us) are living in the past. Speaking for myself, I’m happy to move beyond physical media, but I know that I’m probably not in the majority.

Music aside, if you want the best sound for movies you’re currently forced to buy discs. (In my case as a download (rip) source - I don’t own a disc player). I’d happily move on if that weren’t the case.

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

This article is quite timely

Is this the end of owning music?

The Pic of the LP and saying this is what existed before CDs, My Grandchildren who are 13 - 9 years old though a LP was a CD and asked how it fitted in the CD player in my car.....

Then they wanted to get sticky fingers near my Lovely mint LPs, Then I showed the CD, DVD Bluray which completely baffled them, let alone when I got to DCC, Tape and reel 2 reel tape.

They did admit that Meridian sounds good, but did not understand that MP3 is crap, God help us with the degradation of audio for the masses, TVs have gone from 438 Lines to 4K and Audio has gone the opposite way, good to bad, and the masses if they heard 24/192 audio I suspect with the noise kids call music most of the extra definition would be lost on them.

Good news; the majority of HMV stores have been bought by Canadian, Doug Putman, the owner of Sunrise Records. The HMV name will live on.

Very welcome news.

Interesting that the new owner is looking to increase the amount of vinyl on sale (and aims to be responsive to the local market for each store). Makes sense thinking about the relative costs for music now; newly released LPs were around £7 when I stopped buying them in 1989, now they start around £22. New CDs in 1989 were £14, now £10, and usually drop to ~£6 a couple of months after release.

Cheers

It's probably much more to do with the analogue properties of vinyl. If you want digital download or stream but don't buy a CD - who does that?

Cheers
Tom
