Hi all

This one comes to mind from time to time, as we know the potential benefits of Linear vs Switch Mode power supplies in Meridian kit.

Aftermarket PSU upgrades are available for most of the Oppo BD players, but the one that looks most credible, from South Korea, is a costly venture at around £350. eBay has many listings for PSU options from China, from about £90 to £170, and whilst I've no doubt that something would arrive in the post, I'd be hesitant to install it in my trusty '93 from a safety and reliability viewpoint. Am I being unfairly paranoid? I already have a Vanity board fitted to my player, so I'm certainly not against mods per se.

Has anyone fitted an aftermarket power supply, or inlet socket/cabling to their Oppo, and if so, what are your experiences?

Thanks

George

Pop over to diyaudio.com and search for LPS Oppo 203 you will soon get the notion that they know what

Hi George,

Can you let me know how you get on?
Are you talking about sound improvements or both picture and sound?

Cheers
Shaun

Wow, that's a different Universe over there. Masochistically enough, I've gone through all 62 pages of the Oppo 203/205 thread, and it's not an easy read either.

I'd just about got to the point of thinking that an Oppomod LPSU was a credible option, as the designer was very active in the thread, when it was all stolen away from me on page 60...someone pointed out his unneccesary (and irrelevant, it would seem, as they have no bearing on the audio boards) upgraded caps on the SE version of his LPSU; Coris seconded that opinion.

So whilst I thoroughly enjoy my Vanity HD Oppo 93 and thought an LPSU might make a nice upgrade, I'm now wondering if a new 203 would be a better replacement. But then I lose the excellent Vanity HD capability, so an HD621 needs to be added. Or do I go with a 205 via analogue into the IA45 card? (This was behind my recent "double IA45" query)

Outrageous example of a first world problem really!

Cheers

I know I’ve read it at least twice just to get my head around it.

I don't know how much you want to spend but Audiocom's modification kit seems to cover most aspects and is very impressive: see here. I was lucky enough to buy a complete 203 Signature from Audiocom when players were still available. I found the improvement to picture quality compared to my Oppo 93 to be significant.

Completists might want to buy a special power input socket from Russ Andrews (I have not done so).

A friend of mine has an Audiocom modded 105 and he uses it for SACD. Having heard it in small doses it's very very good!

+1 on Audiocom as well

Regards
David
