Ronomy, John K, Mr Meridian and Gurus alike.
I have read through the thread and lots of congrats and well dones and a few dont do's but no great order. Is there anywhere I can find a process to follow for which bits to download onto a PC and then run and then firmware upgrade the 568.2 so I do not ruin the system for a pleasant weekend of listening, etc. Thanks to all who respond, I have looked at the M we site and the FAQ but again, not really a simple process to run through or am i being thick.
running a 568.2, 598 with multichannel to 5000 - 33 - 5000 fronts and 33 rears all DSP 94.24.
Cant wait to do it but too scared in case I have to return to a dealer to sort out when I know I could probably do it myself better, provided I get the process right.
cheers forum

DSP fan, I've sent you an e-mail with twp .pdf files and a zip file with the firmware exactly as Meridian originally sent them to me.
One .pdf file describes the steps to take with the upgrade. The second is the description of v4 presets and usage.
I had no problems with the instructions and the results, as everyone says, are significantly for the better.

DSP fan,
The M directions worked for the most part for me too. I did have a problem loading the up to date Winfup. It wouldn't load on my Windows 95 laptop. I used the older version I already had installed and everything worked fine. I had to copy all the files into a directory for the winfup to recognize the files. Don't know why that happened. Anyway, it seems most other people have had good luck with the supplied directions.
After the file update I loaded my Type settings into the configuration software and selected 2.50 or better. I then needed to delete any user created settings since the new software is a lot different. The old Cinema needs to be deleted for there is a new Cinema preset. It might be better to start from scratch with your type settings. Write down your speaker distances and volume settings if you don't remember them all. The worse that could happen is you would need to start from scratch if your modified type setting doesn't work. Give it a shot...don't worry it will all work out for you.

Hi there
Sorry to take a while to respond. Doing firmware upgrades has cost me a few grey hairs, so here are some dos and don'ts...
DON'T use a Windows 95 (and possibly Win98)computer. The uploads will continually crash part way through.
DO use a windows 2000 computer!
DO close every other program, virus scanner and PDA sync program running in the background.
DO disable IR ports just in case.
DON'T upload the new firmware unless you are sure you have the appropriate (ie latest) Meridian.exe configuration program installed
DON'T try to upload the series of individual files when you see the selection of several which need to be installed....
DO click on the 568.2 firmware icon for upload, and THAT will consequently line up the several relevant files and start them uploading in order.
DON'T worry if it all crashes part way through. The processor won't die, it will just take several attempts to get it operational, but you do get there.
Good luck!
Cheers
George PS and thanks for asking me!

In response to the above DO's and Dont's:
Disabling IR ports is only required if the port shares the same IRQ as the com port that you are using to connect. (This can be checked by right clicking My Computer and choosing Properties and then the Device Manager Tab)
Crashing out halfway through an upload can be caused by a too high a baud rate. I have tried 38400, but this only has a 50% success rate. A rate of 19200 is more effective. There is nothing wrong with Win 95,98,2000,XP or 2003 when configured correctly. (With my professional experience of serial comms, this is unusual behaviour, as if the baud rate, data, stop and parity bits are wrong, then comms simply doesn't start. It's almost as if the receiving equipment can't keep up with the data stream. Stick to a (s)lower rate, but get better results)
It should only be necessary to disable antivirus etc if the laptop has such a poor processor, that CPU loading is at 100% when doing a simple task.

Hi Pete
Logically, I agree with everything that you say, but throw it open to the forum and see what responses you get ;-)
Cheers

Ron, anyone ! so i have tried this morning and hit a problem with winFUP.exe the new one. I am running a win95 box with nothing else on it as its the only laptop in the world left with an RS232 connection. running winfup the error : The SETUP.EXE file is linked to missing export USER32.DLL:SetMenuInfo
you OK that message and the Meridian self extractor program says it : cannot creat process - a device attached to the system is not functioning.
God bless microsoft - anyone any ideas? thanks a bunch

That's exactly what happened to me...I used an older version of winfup I already had loaded and it worked fine. Do you have Winfup loaded from a previous install?

Ron,
Meridian provided me with a specific winup file for windows 95, however this time i get a wininet.dll missing link. They are looking into it but it appears that in unistalling my previous stuff i deleted the previous files, so answer NO.
i guess I wait for M.
thanks for responding so quick

Is it possible that the deleted files of your previous installion are in the recycle bin on yur desktop? If so, you could restore the .dll files from there.

Great support and yes the stuffs expensive but by god they have a happy customer. Cant wait to tell the wife about the 5200 !!!
