I just wanted to say the following was split from a post in the restaurant in response to someone saying he had had no interest in his items for sale and only had 'tyre kickers'........






I always put what price I would 'like' in the thread, that way people know where I am at and know whether to offer or not. I also sell it all really quickly too.

You have something I might be interested in, however, without knowing what you think it is worth I can only become a tyre kicker as I have to PM you to find out.

Not sure a pm to simply ask price would describe you as a tyre kicker.

I would hope not, but you never know, just read the threads on Pistonheads on what people class tyre kickers as!

A tyre kicker in hifi is someone who comes round, listens to your gear and then says "I have 3 other speakers I need to listen to that are in my budget, thanks for letting me hear these, good bye." (Happened to me a couple of months back).
I get the feeling that has not happened.

Everyone knows what they want for their gear, I don't understand why you would not put that price in with what you are selling.

Not many shops hide the prices, there is a reason for that.

Look on autotrader all the cars have the asking price, and some are priced well and some seriously overpriced, but it gives you an idea of whether to make contact or not.

Most forums I use 'only' allow sales adverts with prices, just seems better for people all round. Stops the seller getting annoyed with what they call low ball offers, and it also gets people making contact if they think it is a good price.

I know what I got for my SW1600, and I know what I would want to pay for another one, but with a HHker saying he had 'unrealistic responses' to his previous advert for it, and saying he has had nothing but tyre kickers means I will just presume we are no where near what each other thinks it is worth.

It was only a bit of friendly advice, as he has some really desirable bits in there.

Anyway, I have probably pissed everyone off as usual, so I will clear off.

Having PM's does remove from this site the pitiful haggling I have seen on AV Forums.

You ask a price BY PM, then you decide if you wish to proceed at that price or negotiate (a little)

We are going OT from the original FS but by someone not sure what a fair price is, they don't risk lowballing both themselves nor other future sellers when a couple of private PM's will soon ascertain whether both parties are likely to make the sale.

On more than one occasion I would say that someone either wanting a quick sale or just not knowing or caring for the market has shifted the market by more than natural supply and demand. So by choosing not to advertise a price, you don't risk putting yourself in that position.

I too would prefer it this way.

I'm not saying don't make offers or make contact by PM, just an indication of price on the thread is a good thing and helps you sell your gear quickly.

I often buy stuff I wasn't even considering when I see it at a good price.

I can see both sides of this discussion. Maybe there is a way that we could come up with a pricing guide so that everyone can get a ballpark figure based on sales trends?

I also think negotiations should be kept off public forums.

A published guide price makes an offer more attractive however I don't think it should be mandated.

There is more to buying and selling than price and condition; simple transactions with easy payment, postage, collection or delivery, and good communications contribute to flexibility on price when buying and selling.

Long standing membership of this forum has, for me, proven to be a reliable guide as to how quick and easy a transaction will be.

I think a good advert should include a decent description, that covers age and condition, and ideally decent photos, along with a price, which can of course say whether they want to listen to offers or pretty firm.

All offers and negotiating can be done privately.

Although, often you see "PM Sent regarding......." and you then you don't know whether they are negotiating or what is happening, so an update to the thread would help to say if it is sold, on hold, still for sale etc. would be good.

All this started as a HHker has some really nice kit up for sale, which he has had advertised for a while now, and I do genuinely think they would have sold if prices had been attached.

Sometimes I don't want to PM someone, and get their hopes up for a sale, if I simply considering having a change around but not 100% what direction to go yet, but seeing something and seeing the price often gets me doing a bit of man maths and pulling the trigger, and I am sure many on here are the same?

I just think if you're selling something, the most important thing to put is the price.

I agree with Guy. I'm immediately put off contacting a seller when the price is POA/missing. That said, this forum is a little different to most... more niche, quiet and I think more gentlemanly, if that makes any sense. Buying my 3100s from Altus was a perfect example of how lovely this place is to trade.

I totally agree, every single trade I have done on here has been brilliant, everyone I have met have been great.

I just know that when selling kit, adding a price sells it far quicker.

You have to remember that many won't have a clue what the current value of used kit is.

When I sold my DSP5200s I originally didn't put a price as I was not sure I wanted to really let them go, if someone had come along and offered me more than I would have wanted I would have let them go, I had one enquiry over a few weeks.

When I did decided to sell them I put the price in the new advert, £1950 for the pair, that was on the Saturday morning, and I had 4 people wanting to buy them by the time I logged back in again on the Monday to have a look.
Quick sale, full asking, sold quickly.
The buyer said he had didn't realise the early 5200s could be had for that price.
