Hello all,

I've posted here before about some DSP33's I've got that have some problems and I've been through a bunch of activities to see if they can be sorted but to no avail. I've been advised of someone who *might* be able to fix them and I'm waiting for them to come back off holiday before I find out if they can. I'm also aware of the fact that the cost to repair could easily be more than the sale price.

So I was wondering, could I turn the speakers into M33's I've got good cabinets, drivers and amps, it would be a shame to waste them when they could potentially be re-used.. Has anyone looked at this?

Does anyone know of the back boards are modular, ie bits could be swapped in and out? Do M33 back boards exist to merely swap in?

Anyone got any thoughts?

You would need to replace the electronics in the DSP33 with those from an M33.

To achieve this you would need to buy working M33s to do the transplant, so why not just use them as is? Also you would need to consider the price difference between the DSP33 and M33 - you may be able to by the DSP33s for not much more.

I don't want to buy new DSP33's as I think I'm going to get out of the M game. If the repairs are too expensive (which is likely) then I don't want to just throw my current DSP33's away and I'd rather not give them away for free if there is still value there.

I'm probably on a hiding to nothing, but I thought I'd ask.

I'm not an electronics engineer, but maybe I need to find one wink

I don't know the answer to the question but it strikes me as being a (likely) great deal of effort (particularly if you aren't that way inclined, as you suggest) for potentially modest gain.

Others may be better able to help.

I think you're right, but I thought it was worth asking. someone might have popped and told me that had 2 M33 backs and they were simple replacement items...

it was just an idea smile

You could always replace the electronics with non Meridian parts, a pair of DSP plate amplifiers could be made to work; have a look at the mini DSP web page.

You could even turn them into a pair of passive ‘speakers, you’d just need to get a set of crossovers made, pretty simple if you know how!

Probably easiest to sell as parts/non-working and buy a functional replacement.

The DIY approach to convert them to passive speakers would be interesting.
