It could be that like with the ID40, the addition of something mechanical like the jumper wire, could just as likely do the same for the ID41 in the v4. Another way to ask the question is - Does the addition of either make it a v6 lite (minus SpeakerLink and whatever else)?

Except that you would need to source the later backplane and I understand that M will not sell you one.

Actually, I heard that it was simply a case of Meridian (understandably) not wanting to support chassis which could be as old as 861v1.

Why then would they not simply have restricted it by serial number? Are you sure you are not confusing it with the DSP -> SE updates where cabinet 'issues' could indeed have made it tricky on older speakers - talk of cabinets being potentially damaged if things went wrong or which there seemed to be a real chance of?

I heard the terminator issue direct from Meridian in a face to face discussion that could probe further for answers. Sounds like others have too.

I suspect that the real reason is probably a combination of things along with Meridian wanting to play it safe - even with what were potentially brand new 861v4's.

The OA08/18 has been found to work in the 861v4. You tell config that it's a OA03/13 and it just works.

Meridian told me they are aware of this anecdotally but have not tested it, so users try this at their own risk. (Risk of explosion, maybe not, risk of it not working, quite possibly.)

Does this get you anything extra given the OA03/13 are 24/192 capable?

It gets you the fact that OAx8 are available and OAx3 are not.
