It clearly means that they believe MQA encoding and packing is of benefit to audio distribution and file integrity.

I suppose imitation is the greatest flattery and they wish they had thought it through and developed it gaining wide industry support.

Ohh, they didn't do that so they'll try to steal a March on the genuine MQA to please the refusnics.

Hmmmmm

No 18 in the Hall of fame smile I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best:
GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 210/ 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone

How can they refer to it as MQA? Surely that name is registered and protected.

Was there not a spat between Auralic and Meridian/MQA at CES a couple of years ago concerning Auralic's implementation of the MQA decoder?

Hopefuly there are sufficient deep-pocketed vested interests in the broader MQA ecosystem to resolve this quickly and unequivocally.

The issue was MQA said the last decode 'must' happen in the DAC, analogue to analogue, and as the Aries doesn't have a DAC it is a network bridge going into their DAC they were not allowed to demo it.

I guess they are simply leaving the MQA decode in place in the latest firmware.

Seeems they developed their own code, like Meridian did with Dolby Digital. Might M agree to this in settling any "misunderstanding" at the initial announcement/launch by Auralic as long as they don't misrepresent what it is?

If it lights up the MQA indicator there would be some serious questions to be considered...

... and if it doesn't light up the MQA indicator it breaks authentication.

Auralic does have a Copyright and Trademark clause. Funny enough it states
Quote
AURALiC's trademarks may not be used in connection with any product or service that is not AURALiC's, in any manner that is likely to cause confusion among customers, or in any manner that disparages or discredits AURALiC.
crazy

Well, when even the two most famous English heritage brands RR are copied (by Landwind and Geely) and nothing they can do about it I wonder how succesfull the M lawyers will be. Maybe the music industry will step in.

Possibly there is a per-unit royalty for the MQA-developed code which was too steep (I can't imagine it was because the code was not of sufficient quality). As long as it is a sanctioned implementation there is no reason why they shouldn't get a blessing from MQA. There is an interesting question if they have access to the certificates which enable authentication (lack of that shouldn't actually prevent the decode).

Low-mid cost consumer electronics is price sensitive, if MQA are charging too much for decoding software this could be a limitation to mass adoption.
