I fear I am somewhat behind the curve on this!

Am I right in thinking that if I manage to rip my SACD's to Roon (from my Oppo BDP-105) then my Meridian ID41 will not be able play them back using DSD and therefore some quality is lost.

In this instance I might have to invest in a DSD capable Roon endpoint from which I could take the digital output to my Meridian DAC via USB to enjoy the full potential of the SACD's?

I have only got about a dozen such discs anyway so I am now wondering if its worth the effort, as the discs can be played back using the Oppo (and its replacement) anyway?

I assume Meridian is unlikely/unable to allow DSD playback via ID41 in the foreseeable future either.

The ID41 is limited to 96/24 so yes, you won't get the full DSD layer. In my setup Roon will convert the ripped DSD to PCM and the 818 will send 96/24 PCM to my 6Ks which is all they can handle anyway. So for me the benefit is "upgrading" from the redbook layer to 96/24. At least that's how I understand it.

Yes, at some point in the audio chain the DSD has to be converted to PCM, Roon will gladly do it for you and then stream it to the ID41/ID40 or you can buy a DSD capable USB networkable DAC and then the 818 can convert the DSD to PCM. I have not extensively tested the different streamers. I have found with my thirty-odd SACDs it is far more convenient to stream with Roon then to root around my office for the old disks.
