Hi Guys,

Big mistake! Downloaded and installed firmware update 4.2.3 onto my TS 453A and now I have no music.

QNAO and Sooloos were happy bedfellows up until then.

I tried rebooting both individually and simultaneously to no avail.

Looked at length on the QNAP for clues as to rewind to earlier settings and no joy there either.

Does anyone know how to correct this?

You should roll back to 4.2.0. You can get this (with a bit of pleading) from QNAP. If you get stuck I do have it for x53A QNAPs so you could pm me.

Surely it's unacceptable that this situation is still going on. Is it a Meridian or QNAP responsibility do we think?

Both and/or neither and/or user.

That's the benefit of dedicated Sooloos hardware. A lockstep environment that minimises incompatibilities between versions, unlike third party kit that will always be a moving goalpost.

If Meridian said to upgrade and/or said that version was compatible and it isn't, then they should issue a fix, otherwise QNAP should try and maintain backward compatibility but sometimes it is unavoidable that incompatibilities may creep in.

One has to ask why user upgrades, especially iirc that Meridian recommend using NAS dedicated for Sooloos. If that is so, then its the users responsibility.

Imho.

Exactly. I know this doesn't help the OP, but it's why I remain skeptical of the NAS-as-core approach Meridian has chosen. I suspect it's one of those situations where a solution can be cheap, good or reliable but you only get to have two of these attributes at the same time.

As someone who has had weeks of work go up in smoke due to a firmware update I can only offer the following advice:

Never do a firmware update without checking first as to what it fixes (if anything) that would have a benefit to the applications you are using. Do your due diligence and check user forums for the applications your are running. If there are problems, it will be well documented on the appropriate forum as it is here with a sticky thread. In all honesty, it has been quite some time since it was originally reported and should have been corrected by now.

I have a QNAP TVS-871 running the latest firmware 2.4.2.1312 and Roon runs perfectly on it and every time I have updated the QNAP. I have not had any issues with Roon, I would suggest the issue is more Sooloos than QNAP.

However as has been said Meridian state the NAS should be dedicated to Sooloos and one of the first actions when setting the NAS up as per Meridians instructions is to disable automatic firmware updates, not sure they say to never update though?

Meridian really need to sort this. I also have a TVS 871 running Sooloos (older Qnap firmware). I personally don't really need to update the Qnap firmware but I am sure that Qnap will ship new units with the latest firmware which will not play ball with Sooloos.

Isn't that what buying from a PP will solve?

I can see that updating a piece of software that probably brings in minimal monetry value will be pretty low on Meridian's list.

It would be different if people were paying for it and there were not any other options. I would much rather get the MQA decoding as promised on my Meridian hardware that was certainly not free rather than spending time and money on fixing a bit of free giveaway software.

Déjà vu Russ.

Good call

Could you now provide your predictions for the 6 Nations games this weekend so that William Hill, Bet 365 et al can fund my next upgrade.

The QNAP is Meridian's chosen solution for running core and or storage, I spoke to PP's a year ago that weren't interested in selling any QNAP NAS's as they made no money on them and they would have to support them!

What is the difference between QNAP updating their supported firmware and say Apple updating iOS, Sooloos has to work on both surely?

I would expect Meridian to suggest to all Sooloos users that they hold off updating their QNAP to the latest firmware until Meridian Sooloos developers confirm Sooloos will work, this could be posted on HH or on the Meridian website in a prominent position.
