Today, I found my rear DSP3200 running (quietly) when the G61RSL was in standby, so I powered off the G61RSL waited a minute then switched it on again, but no display or functions.

I was wondering if this is one of the symptoms of a failed PSU. I checked the fuse, then opened the case and checked with my multimeter that I have power in the PSU.

I disconnected the power cable and measured the output.

Yellow/black 0v
red/black 0v
black/case 43v

Am I correct in assuming yellow should be +12v blue -12v and red +5v.

If the PSU has failed is it likely to have taken out other components, or do they just normally shutdown?

Any help appreciated.

Hi Andy

My brother had a G61R PSU fail and it did no other damage, not sure on the voltages but they don't look to promising.

It's completely random/luck if it takes out other components with it.

My G68 blew twice and took other component out both times.

You also need to be careful measuring output on switching power supplies with no load.
You can get erroneous readings.

Even if nothing is damaged it's recommend some capacitors be replaced.

Not sure if I remember correctly but some early G68 PSU's were able to fail 'high' causing damage to other components, later ones failed low? Happy to be corrected.

My G68 failed and took out analogue components, the tuner and the DACs, expensively.

Hi there,
My G61RSL failed just before Christmas when the circuit breakers in the house tripped. Changed the fuse inside the unit a couple of times hearing a click on switch on then nothing else. Took to my local dealer who sent to Meridian.
There was no further damage just the power supply itself. At least I got the upgrade to the Linear Power Supply as a requirement rather than just a replacement that the rest of the family would see as not a priority.

Thank you for your replies.

I disconnected the output from the PSU when measuring the voltages as I didn't want it to cause any further problems while I was testing.

I did a bit more investigating. I took off its case, discharged its main cap with a large resistor just in case it still had 400v.

Now I can see its a XP POWER ECM40UT31 so ordered one from Farnell. I see it has a small pot next to the outputs. I don't know if Meridian adjust it in any way.

Fidldler,

Do you know which caps should be replaced? I see a group next to the leads from the PSU.

Does anyone have a link to a service manual or a schematic for the base board?

Andy

The pot allows you to adjust the ouput voltage on the 5v tap. It should be 5.2v under load.

It is very unusual for capacitors beyond the power supply itself to fail. It is VERY usual for capacitors within the (switched mode) power supply itself to fail/alter in value after about 3 years (or less if your unit is located where cooling is poor).

It is possible to repair the power supply by replacing capacitors within it, but the supplies are so cheap to buy new (with a three year guarantee which XP Power are very good about honouring) that you would be mad to do so - or have far too much time on your hands and be looking for something fiddly to do - fiddly even with a desoldering station. I have done it but more for entertainment than anything else. Do set the 5v line to 5.2v as already advised. You cannot assume it is factory set to that.

It should be measured at the regulator on the COM PCB and should measure 5v. Suggestions of measuring 5.2v at the PSU are to approximately account for voltage drop between the PSU and the main processor.
