Let's look at this a different way. I looked up a random Hi-res download CD from Linn Records. It asks $24.00 U.S. for one Hi-res download. I consider that expensive, especially if I don't like every track.
My Hifi Tidal subscription cost is $20.00 per month.
I can listen to one Linn CD worth of music, multiple times or I can listen to 1 month worth of MQA files of any of the artists on the Tidal service, as many times as I like.
I wish Linn well, but Tidal/MQA is a better choice for my hard earned dollars.

You could argue that is better than ownership in that, failing the breakdown of the internet, you can have all the music you could ever want for about $2500 a decade. Being in my fifties, I've got about three of those left if I'm lucky. So seven and half grand to see me through to the box for all the music I could ever want (or might not have even got the chance to know existed), that I can always have with me, that I don't have to ship or store each time I move, that won't get scratched or need backing up or get lost down the back of the sofa, and that is at least as good sonically as that on the CDs that are now just taking up space in my attic, is pretty good value in my books.

I spent more than that buying and shipping laser discs back in the day. I eventually sold the lot that laser rot hadn't got for £300.

At least Linn's rant has given extra publicity to MQA!

grin

Embarrassingly, not having grown up in this country, I only had a vague notion of who they might be, so I pulled up their main tunes on Tidal. Safe to say that, if anything, their albums would be liabilities within the estate that my kids could legitimately set against any potential inheritance tax.

Little known fact!

Were you admiring his jumper at the time?

His jumper probably saved him. It was one of those old coaching inns where the car park is through the old passageway that the coaches used to go through.

He stepped out into the passage just as I was egressing.
