Well there still has been no announcement nor mention for the 861v8 to be upgraded to be able to pass MQA full fat. No software or hardware resolve.

It was announced I believe nearly two years ago that it would be capable and those of us who do have the 861 as the main are still given no idea as to if there will be a resolution soon.

Hopefully with the upcoming CES there will be some mention.

My understanding is that MQA is designed to be a stereo only format and that multi-channel DSP (such as room correction or Trifield generation) can and will cause the unwanted artefacts which MQA strives to eliminate to return. So any MQA capability in an 861 would be surely limited to stereo only.

Given that you have an 808v6 and DSP8000SEs you clearly have an MQA-capable installation which you can run in combination with the 861v8, as others have detailed here. Assuming you can actually buy some MQA music releases whistle

I suspect that the more significant reasons for delay on the putative 861 upgrade relate more to the implementation of the immersive and object-based multi-channel cinema codecs.

Just a bit of added clarification:

The MQA format can support discrete multi-channel audio, but no one is doing it yet.

An MQA aware processor could apply room correction, but no one is doing it yet.

DSPing (Trifield etc.) a MQA stereo audio to multichannel could be done by an MQA aware processor. However, as you say there would be some compromises... just as we have today (how significant I don't know).

Technically an MQA aware 861 is quite possible, whether it is ever built ... is another matter.
(I'd quite like one as I don't really want a 861 and an 818).

Carl

Greg,
Maybe M are holding off on the MQA enabled 861 until there's some genuine content.
After all, imagine spending say £2k+ on an upgrade, only for MQA to never actually happen and how you'd feel then?

Carl, would you write more about this? I recall a fairly recent comment by Bob Stuart that "you can't have it both ways" and I think he was talking about preserving MQA end to end vs applying DSP and room correcction. We're all hoping ...

Carl,

Are you sure room correction (or any DSP) can be applied to MQA without compromising it?

Hi Ken,

I didn't say without compromise, (there is always a compromise with any filtering MQA or no MQA) just that it is possible ... i.e. it's not automatically precluded, so it could happen if there was the will to do so.

From what I recall it was said (by a Bob) that a MQA aware processor would be able to work in 'conjunction' with MQA encoded audio rather than simply ignoring it.

Regards,
Carl

Hi Jim,

I'm recalling from what Bob said whilst presenting and the following discussion with him at a pre-MQA-launch meeting at M.

Sorry I can't added any more substance to this, I wish I could.

Regards,
Carl

Your question is less than hypothetical given he has DSP8000USE for the front pair. With the ante for that already behind him, he only needs a small portion of his imagination for a mere £2k😳

Probably feel very similar to those of us who upgraded our 8x8s to latest spec and MQA capability.

Actually, that upgrade, with ultra-low jitter architecture, brought a significant improvement in sound quality irrespective of MQA. Even though Meridian lag behind with the specifications of the 861 and the HD621, a similar upgrade to the 861 in the meantime while they sort themselves out would be very welcome and, for them, very straightforward.

As for waiting for MQA content, we have already been waiting nearly two years so Meridian just need to crack on with other projects.

The upgrade from 818v2 to 818v3 was so cheap compared to anything to do with DSPs that I was happy to do it even without any much MQA available.

I'm happy to have the most up-to-date 818 and also to indicate to Meridian that there is a market for this kind of work. (Idealistic? Maybe.)
