Hi,

We recently bought a pair of Meridian DSP8000SE's to go with three legacy DSP8000 (non SpeakerLink).

The idea is to create a 3 front and two rear system. Front behind the movie screen will be DSP8000SE as front L and R and one of the legacy 8000 as center. Two legacy DSP8000's will be placed behind us as rear L and R. All of these to be powered by 861v4.

Currently, the center DSP8000 legacy is fed by 861 output for comms and digital. Then the front two DSP8000SE are connected by RJ45. However, in this scenario, we are unable to run a comms link from center 8000 legacy to either right or left DSP 8000SE since the 8K SEs only have BNC or SpeakerLink input.
See picture for all the rear panels for clarity.

Picture of the rear panels

Would you please review the attached picture and suggest the best way to hook up these five speakers? Can we directly connect the traditional comms from 861 or center legacy DSP 8000 to R or L 8000SE using a BNC cable that has legacy Meridian comms on the other end (is there such a thing?)
Or do I need an AC12? Looking for a cost effective solution.

Help!
M

I've previously gone from legacy comms to BNC comms. If that's all that you need it will be fine.

You will need a DIN to BNC dongle to make the transition. Contact me should you need one as I keep them in stock. I originally had my 8ksSE connected this way.

What is driving the 8000SE (AES Audio)? I don't think you want an AC12, it's really designed to go from SL PreAmp to Non SL Speakers. But it's possible you might be able to use it in reverse if you know what you are doing.

I think you want an AC11. It's designed to drive SL Speakers with a non SL Preamp. Basically it turns your Non SL Preamp into a SL Preamp. Not Cheap. And a bit overkill for just 2 SL speakers.

You can probably do it with Revivers as well but you'll have to talk to Robert about that.

One other thought. Can you add (or swap) an SL Card to your 861v4? If it can't handle SPDIF Out Card and SL Card at once, you could do the SL Card (remove SPDIF Card) and then use AC12's (or Revivers) for your Non-SL DSP's. Probably not cheap but cleaner, especially if you upgrade more speakers.

The AC12 can indeed be used both ways round, I understand.

But he doesn't need that, or an AC11 (too complicated, and no fun with a mixed system), or a Reviver.

He just needs a load of legacy cables with BNC plugs on the end of some of them.

(And I've never heard of anyone putting an SL card in a v4. I don't think it would be simple. The software likely wouldn't accept it, even if you could get a spare card...)

I agree it could be done without AC11 or Reviver. But he needs to convert his Coax SPDIF from 861v4 to RJ45 AES on his 8000SE. Which is not that hard or expensive. But it's not just a "Cable or Connector".

Good to know the AC12 can be used in reverse, I figured it might but it made my head hurt thinking about it. Out of curiosity how would one use the AC12 in reverse here? Both cases, where one of the SpeakerLink speakers has a Master or does not.

I was not sure if he wanted to do all the "Custom" work.

No he doesn't need to convert to RJ45 AES. All 8000 speakers with an SL socket also have a SPDIF and a BNC legacy comms input. In the scenario the OP has, he should just use those and no worry about the SL input.

I had the same issue. What I did was to remove the DIN connector and soldered on a BNC connector for the R main 8k SE and also for the return comms from the L slave 8k SE to the 861v4. I ran a RJ45 from the R main to the L slave. This provided audio and comms to the L slave.

This allowed me to use the legacy comms from the 861v4.

If you would rather not solder the connectors yourself, you can purchase the previously mentioned dongles from Bruce. He has always been a great resource for me.

This also allowed me to connect my 818 via RJ45 directly to my R main 8k SE and use the to front speakers in direct mode without involvement of the 861. You can set the input "AUX" to the RJ45 input in the 8k SE setup.

Gary,
Many thanks. Decided to go with Bruce. He has been very knowledgeable and very responsive. Hoping to get the parts in by Monday or Tuesday.
