Hi,

Has anyone come up with a solution for connecting the F80 to a new TV without S-Video?

The sound is still fantastic and I would like to play music DVD's through a Sony 50" TV. It only has HDMI and the SCART doesn't support S-Video. I bought a S-Video to SCART monster cable but it only shows in black and white.

Many thanks,
Tony

With older Sony TV's, if you chose AV 1st time it would expect composite, and when you selected 2nd time it would switch to S-video. Otherwise probably a setting in TV menu...

Unfortunately SCART only supports RGB. It's a Sony BRAVIA KDL‑50W829B.

Hi Tony,

Googling "S-Video to HDMI cable adapter" brings up quite a few results.
Maybe one of them might fit the bill for you (I've not used one, so can't recommend a specific model.)

Regards,
Carl

S Video/Composite Video Convertor

I understand that your TV supports composite. S-Video to composite is quite straight forward and if analogue chain is good quality, wont be hugly inferior to the baseline S-Video signal which is non optimal whether you keep analogue or digitise via HDMI.

Thanks Ian,

I'll try that. I have an expensive S-Video cable so hopefully the picture will be ok.
Have you tried it yourself?

I did try one of those boxes before but it seemed to mess up the display format.

Pretty sure I once ran the converter (they are totally passive with no odd conversion taking place so it's all down to build quality) probably from Maplin years ago when I ran analogue into my SGI 540 via a Sony broadcast video matrix. It was pretty good (broadcast quality) for SD displays, but not sure what upsampling onto large screen would look like - but same goes for S-Video.

Well done, composite and S-Video is pretty close, but compared with uncompressed native HD, it's not going to be comparable. But that's the limitation imposed by F80 and you can only work with what you have and try not to degrade signal.

Hi Ian
Just wanted to check with you before I order it.
Do I also need a composite cable as well to go into the TV or does the converter plug directly into the TV ?
Many thanks

I would double check on Sony community forum what people use.looks like you use one of the component inputs and possibly set to composite mode.

Its nearly 18 years since i used this setup so my memory is vague, but by the looks of the maplin connector, its a double ended unit with s-video socket at one end and composite phono socket at other. So it will act as a gender changer between two cables with plugs.

So yes, looks like it needs a composite cable - probably only needs to be a very short run, but that depends on cable quality.
