What MKV media streaming setups are people using considering the need for HD audio decoding to LPCM 5.1 or 7.1 when using Meridian gear?

for many years I have been making my MKV's with 5.1 and 7.1 FLAC audio soundtracks. This seems to work well with the older Dune series (discontinued) and Plex Media Server (software transcoding to apple tv 4th gen).

I would recommend the new Dune and FLAC soundtracks. yes, it is a pain, but not too bad. I feel all new streamers would support mkv standards, and FLAC audio seems to be well supported by current and previous streamers. For DVDs I still use DD and DTS, which are more widely support standards, even for Meridian processors.

This approach doesn't work with Atmos, of course, but we are chatting on a Meridian forum so it doesn't apply.

At this point, the question becomes, how to create a video wall that is more functional than navigating SMB/NFS directory structures. I use Zappiti though it appears that there are others on the market now that are better.

It would seem converting to FLAC is there best option for us Meridian Users. Are you using makemkv to convert your Blu-rays? If you are can you help with what library you are using and what settings you are using?

Looks like the latest version of MakeMKV converts the HD audio formats natively and I don't have to re-rip the discs. Hopefully it is truly lossless with out any faults.

One thing to consider when converting to FLAC is that you loose all metadata in the stream.

- 7.1 to 5.1 downmix coefficients

- 7.1/5.1 to Stereo downmix coefficients

- Dialog Normalization level

- Dynamic Range Compression hints

I use Kodi and an Intel PC. Kodi is superb!

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

I was just looking into kodi funnily enough. They do appear to have all down mix coefficients for 7.1 to 5.1 included as options.

I should add that, while Kodi is rapidly evolving and flexible, setup and maintenace are considerably more complex than a dedicated media player

Kodi configuration can be a nightmare, so I went with OpenELEC; it's Kodi plus minimal Linux all wrapped up together and dead easy.
