So it's possible if the player is either a Blu-ray player or media streamer that doesn't have a setting to select the desired output channels that it still may down mix by reading the EDID signal that the HD621 is broadcasting?

Hmmm, I stand corrected. I forget part of the reason for HD621 solution is I think Meridian didn't want to get into Decoding the Lossless formats.

So with an HD621 what should the player be set too? Bitstream or LPCM. Or does it matter? because the EDID will just tell player I want N channels of LPCM.

I'm thinking LPCM might be a safer setting.

Here's something interesting.

The HD621 HAS both an 8 channel MHR output and a SpeakerLink output. At present, the Meridian processors allow for a 6 MHR channel input. This being the case, you have the choice to select 8-channel downmix to 6 in the source product (eg BD player speaker menu) or to feed the audio 8channel to the HD621 and have it downmix channel 6 to MHR.

This would be great if in fact the HD621 could do the down mixing. Does anyone have a direct link to HQ and would be able to find out if the HD621 can down mix 7.1 to 5.1.

Sorry to Hijack your thread George but i think the answer to this would help both of us.

No, this is not possible, the HD621 does not down mix.

When used with an 861v4 or G series process the HD621 must be set to 6 channel otherwise channel information will be lost.

Only the 861v6 and higher support 8 channel input via MMHR (note this is not SpeakerLink) but does use an RJ45 connector).

Regards,
Carl

Yes it has to be set to 6 channels if that's what the processor downstream accepts. What the statement is saying is that 8 channels are sent to the HD621 via HDMI and 6 are output. At least that's how I read it. this was apparently Text from Meridian during the launch.

You are right Carl, the HD621 does not down mix, This was direct for Meridian so I was interpreting the statement incorrectly.

Meridian marketing statement, like many marketing statements from companies, can often be interpreted on many different levels. Many a time has a statement been made that has been incorrectly interpreted by many, not corrected by marketing, and subsequently found to mean something entirely different.

Using an example, a ficticious hifi company makes a new set of speakers. One of the marketing statements is that 'they help make your tea'. Many wishful thinkers may buy the speakers thinking that they put the kettle on for you or something. The reality is that they don't do anything other than making the process of making tea more pleasurable by allowing you to listen to music whilst waiting for the kettle to boil. Yet the completely irrelevent statement 'they help make your tea' still holds true. And someone bought that set of speakers and is still patiently waiting for their cup of tea whilst still enjoying listening to the music through their new speakers.
