Is it possible to use a 502 (with appropriate cards) into an 818->DSPs in that how would you get over the volume being controlled on both units at once?

Don't connect comms?

Sell the 502 and buy a normal phono stage?

Wouldn't the two units pick up the same remote control volume level even without comms?

I'd rather use the 502 as I like the sound and use it for other duties too.

I just sold a 502 with phono, it's suprisingly good! Not sure how you can config in your setup but it is worth the effort IMO.

Thanks, yeah the 502 is a great sounding unit, IMO, and very flexible, I'd be loath to part with it!

See if the following works:

Connect by comms.
Set the 502 Controller = N.Con
Set the 502 Volume = N

Use the tape outputs; they are fixed level...

Ah, thanks!

I'll try both - if I can get fixed level without going through the tape loop it might be a shorter signal path(?).

Logically, the volume control would be after the input selection stage; there may be a buffer stage for the tape output, but there'll definitely be a volume stage, so the signal paths probably have the same amounts of electronics in them.

Does anyone know if the 502 is a true balanced design, or the more common unbalanced design with balanced inputs (converted to unbalanced) and balanced outputs (converted from unbalanced)?

Best way is to just give it a go and see; only benefit of using the tape output is that you could still use the rest of the 502 for another system.

All the best,
Steve
