Meridian recommend Cat 5 to connect their speakers via SpeakerLink.
Is there any reason why, for example Cat 7 cables could not be used?
Has any used the higher spec cables?

Meridian actually have their own cat 7 SpeakerLink cable, but their manuals suggest that Cat 5 can also be used.

From the Meridian SpeakerLink data sheet:

Quote
What cables do I need?
No cables are supplied with the product as you can use standard Ethernet cabling as long as it is STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) CAT 5 or 6 cable. You may need to meet additional standards when installing cable in- wall, but as far as SpeakerLink is concerned, CAT 5/6 STP is all there is to it.

STP cables have shiny RJ45 connectors.

Edit: Incidentally, I found this flat Cat 6 which is a much cheaper alternative to the real thing... Caveat: not used the cable or the vendor.

I'm using Audioquest Vodka C7 Ethernet cables. Never compared them to the Inhouse SpeakerLink cables, but I wanted some substantial cables for my substantial speakers, so...

I'm using Vandesail CAT7 STP from Amazon. CAT 7 is overkill I'm sure but the price was right, it's flat so easy to lay and it is STP so everything's good.

I heard a very convincing Chord Company demonstration of Ethernet cables today that had me in no doubt that they can have a profound effect on the final result.

Worth noting that the signal in SpeakerLink is actually AES balanced and not Ethernet packets though.

I have tested a number of cables for SpeakerLink. Chord Anthem, Audioquest Vodka, UTP Cat 5E/6 patch Cables, STP cat 5E/6 patch Cables.

I could only hear a difference if the cable was shielded or not. So I don't think you should invest in expensive Cables like Chord, Audioquest. A good industrial STP Cable is the best choice.

I carried out a lengthy test of Chord and Audioquest cables and reported my findings in an earlier thread last year which carries extensive discussion and controversy: here

Much to my surprise, I discovered a marked preference for Chord Anthem.
