Evening all, I said I would give feedback on the Amy Duncan MQA album - sorry it's a bit delayed.

At present the only way we can listen to this album in MQA is using an upgraded Explorer 2. We have Parrot Zik 2 headphones, some high end Sennheisers buds , some mid range Sennheiser buds and finally Bayer Tecknik Pro over ear phone.

Yes it's a nice album... our cross check is an Explorer 1 using the same MQA file and using these various headphones. One has to try very hard to hear a significant difference. Yes there is something extra there, but it's a slight nuance, It's certainly not mind-blowing, as I recalled from MQA demo at Meridian Oxford.

I suspect my son's 25 year old ears can hear discern a lot more than mine... ( nearly 70), but even he was saying yes it sounds pretty good but the Explorer 2 was always slightly better than 1, even before the MQA upgrade.

We have some 52KSE's purchased specifically one year ago to enjoy the MQA experience, we heard at Oxford. My memory of that demo was really about the remarkable detailed soundstage - which is rather different to listening on headphones.

I am not sure when or how I am going to be able to use my 52K SE's with MQA , but I am betting it's going to mean another heavy entry ticket. Truly hope I am wrong.

PS noting Bob's point about lights on the Explorer 2 - we only have the 3 white lights - no blue light, but the Diagnostic confirms MQA upgrade.....

Thanks
Best regards Huw

I would suggest that you are not sending bit-perfect to the Explorer² and that your PC or Mac is up-sampling to 4x rate audio...

It's up to the player to take exclusive access of the output card [Explorer 2]. Please tell us your player of choice.

Yes Huw your observations on MQA quality are based on NOT hearing MQA!

Bit perfect replay is essential and also blue or green light on the Explorer. So no upsampling, volume control at 100% and 24 bit resolution.

There are many files available on 2l website to do a proper comparison. See separate thread in decoded MQA.

If no coloured light with VLC (and there are some posts on web re bit perfect replay with VLC, then suggest trying, for example, AUDIRVANA as recommended by Meridian. You can trial it free!

Good luck....

Audirvana is only OSX based isn't it?

Could be that Huw is using the term PC in the general sense and it's actually a Mac.
Otherwise he'll need to look elsewhere.

Love the understatement there Carl laugh

+1 to Roon

Though the price is somewhat different to VLC
But in my opinion worth it, and it just keeps getting better and better

According to VLC_help neither ASIO or WASAPI are supported for bit perfect output from VLC on PC - maybe you should use Foobar2000 (which supports both) or another player with bit perfect output.

Thanks guys, sorry for tardy reply , we have been away the whole weekend at Goodwood indulging my other passion- classic cars.

The VLC trial with upgraded Explorer 2 was on a high end Windows PC( my sons) It was compared with an Explorer1.
The album was downloaded originally on a Mac book pro
We have Roon on the Macs could also instal on the Windows PC

We will certainly try the other options and look forward to the revelation of true MQA.

Thanks
Regards
Huw
