so i saw an arcam driving an INFOCUS screenplay with an HDMI link - oh my god ! it was awesome, left my 598 and its 1200 progressive scan upgrade looking miserable with my sony WPL10 projector.
Running the 598 with component through the infocus was obviously better but at least 25% less quality.
So when will Meridian give us loyal upgraders an HDMI upgrade for the 598 ???
And the answer is not G-series.
Could we rally enought interest if they watch this forum ?
Is there a way of doing it as a bolt on module ?
Your thoughts and flames, thanks

I looked into this myself a while back and the answer from Meridian was No, because of space limitations in the 5 series casing primarily. I think that's fair enough, especially when you consider that the HDMI format did not exist when the 5 series DVD machines were produced.

There is a Dutch company, JVB, that can modify a 596/598 to deliver an SDI digital output which you can then scale up & convert to HDMI with the appropriate scaler.

However, it's far cheaper just to buy an HDMI equipped DVD player than go through all this hassle!

Regards

Paul

thanks paul, i have just scoured the old forum stuff and sound the JVB mod to be 500 euros, add a scaler and you are near 1000 which is the price of the arcam so hmm !!

Also i read that DLP gives everyone headaches which sounds a little worrying as my LCD does not, so perhaps i need to hang on for plasma to get cheaper and bigger, or buy a G91 as an interim when i win the lottery tonight.
thanks again
tony

Tony - I think that suggesting that "DLP gives everyone headaches" is rubbish if you don't mind me saying so. Some of the early DLP projectors did do this to an extent but that does not happen so much these days, with faster colour wheels etc.

I've been using DLP for 3+ years without a single headache! And without the 'chickenwire' effect that some LCD projectors give too.

I like the sound of the Arcam, although it does not scale the HDMI output so you are still at the mercy of your plasma or projectors own scaler.

Paul
