Hi everyone

I recently sold my Meridian processor so now I have my DSP5200's connected directly to my motherboard via a coaxial to toslink converter. Once I had done that I decided to reset the type on the speakers but now it isn't giving me the option to set a master speaker. Is setting a master only applicable to Meridian processors?

Even though it doesn't give you an option to set master on either speaker, the red master light is active on both speakers. I am getting sound from both speakers too but the volume level can lose sync from time to time depending how the remote is pointed towards them.

The right speaker is the one connected to the PC so this should be the master. When setting type these are the menu's I am given.

1. R or L
2. R. slv or L slv
3. L slv2 or L slv2

To get the correct sound from both speakers I had to use the following settings.

Right Speaker
1. R
2. L slv
3. R slv2

Left Speaker
1. L
2. L slv
3. L slv2

Everything is working as should except for the volume losing sync which I am assuming is because of both master lights being active. If possible I would like to get this working properly. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, it's always possible to set MASTER / SLAVE.

Have you read and followed page 28 'Choosing standard settings' of the DSP User Guide ?

What model of DSP5200 are these (Legacy, SpeakerLink, SE)?

What firmware version are they running (press display when in standby)?

What TYPE number did you set them to?

Which input on your Master speaker are you using?

Note the slave speaker should use / be configured for input D1 / SpeakerLink), even if you're using D2 on the Master.

Regards,
Carl

Hi (Jeff?)

With any Meridian speaker layout there should only ever be one master speaker. It doesn't matter if you have a pair of speakers on their own, or seven speakers in a surround system, only ever one master.

If you retype a speaker it defaults to be a Master.

A Master speaker has the Red light on it in normal operation (always on I think when in the configuration/type process)

Sound to me like you have both speakers set to Master as they both have the red light on them.
That means both their IR receivers are active, and they both think they are in charge of the volume setting, hence the volume confusion.

Using Type 1 which is the correct type for a stereo pair of speakers (Turn on the speaker's power switch while holding down 1 on the MSR remote, pointing at the speakers display)

Set your right speaker to Right Master
(Defaults to Left Master after a re-type so press the v key on the MSR to select Right)

Your left speaker to Left Slave
(Defaults to Left Master so press the Play key on the MSR to select slave)

That should leave you with just the red light on the right speaker, and the volume back in sync.

If you have more than one zone: do you have to have one master for each separate zone?

Yes Pieter if I understand your question correctly, this is the convention.

Carl and Rick,

Thanks very much for the help. It turns out that it was something stupid that I missed and forgot about. I thought that the display would show master but the first menu being R or L is the master setting. I thought I had to press play to save the master but that was just to get to the next menu to select slave.

Also when I set the slave speaker there was no sound out of it until I changed it from digital in 1 to digital in 2. Everything is sorted now with one master and one slave.

Thanks again.

Hi again Jeff,

Glad you're up and running now.

I'm curious about this. How are the two speakers connected together?

Also would you mind answering my previous questions, so I can get a better handle on your system and make sure it's the most optimal?

Hi Carl

Digital input 1 on the master is connected to the optical out on my PC.

Digital out on the master is connected to digital input 2 on the slave.

The comms out on the master is connected to the comms in on the slave.

Type 1

Firmware 1.0

These are mark 2 legacy version, just before SpeakerLink.

Let me know if you need anymore info.

Thanks

Hi again,

Thanks for the extra info.

Typicaly slaves are connected using input 1 (the default) you're using D2 ... so that explains why you had to change the config so it used D2. There's no disadvantage in using D2 on slaves just uncommon.

The latest firmware for you DSP5200 is v1.40 which adds appodising filters which is well worth having.

Updating the firmware is possible by the the user, but does involve using a Windows PC, an RS232 null modem lead, USB to RS232 adaptor (if PC the does not have a serial port).

The firmware updating software can be downloaded from Meridian's website via the common installer and the firmware can be sourced either from you local dealer or a forum friendly one (I can PM you details if interested)

Regards,
Carl

When I had these connected to a G91 I was using input 1 and they worked perfectly but now connected to the PC they will only work on input 2. Not sure why though but that's how it is.

I have updated firmware before on the G91 but I sent the null modem cable I had with that so need to get a new one before I can update the firmware on this.

Do you know where I can download firmware 1.40 for this?

Regards
