QNAP has introduced the TS-453A and TS-253A models. Here is a comparison between the TS-453A and the existing TS-453 Pro.

I just upgraded from a TS-219P to a TS-853A. Having seen the relative performance of a HS-251 that I installed I'm pretty sure I'm going to notice the upgrade. Will report back on Logitech Media Server (Squeezebox) performance though I guess it's mostly going to be about DB and web responsiveness as streaming was never an issue.

Hardware encryption seems to be the main functional addition with the loss of key locks (does that matter) and USB2 ports.

No USB 2.0: only USB 3.0. Plus, 2 HDMI ports rather than 1. Linux functionality is also a major feature of the TS-253A/453A. It's supposedly also 4K video compatible - with JRiver functionality too. A new feature on this model is a 24bit DAC with audio out, plus additional ADC audio output. It would therefore make an ideal QTS Roon device (if such a thing was possible). Likewise, would the audio capabilities of these QNAP models facilitate a QTS software variant of MQA from Meridian?

QNAP have put a webinar on the new x53A series. I haven't watched it, but the PowerPoint presentation was pretty helpful. I do hope they carry on the series.

That is really useful! I wish they did a comparison with the 453mini too

For NAS drives such as QNAP, Roon will soon introduce 'QPackage'.
Mike Fass informs me that that Roon's database and processor requirements are well beyond what was needed for Sooloos. System requirements haven't been announced for their Linux builds, but they will be pretty similar to their Windows and OSX requirements.
This means that i5 and i7 processors will be required - rather than Atom and Celeron-based NAS drives - such as the expensive QNAP TVS-471-PT-4G, for example.
It would be more cost-effective to buy a dedicated Mac or PC, in my opinion.

Is that even for just running Roon server without the GUI?
Thanks, Edd
