Last New Year: Smokey New Year - need a remote diagnosis

The smoke and smell coming from the G68!
It smelled so bad that we had had to change the location and partied with our friends at there home.
Since then, the G68 does not boot. There was only a small pre sign - the fan on the unit had been running for some time more than before and increasingly in higher speed, while also disable some time in standby mode.
Does anyone know what could probably be the reason for this problem? Transformer or what?
Thanks and greetings from Switzerland. Stefan
A year later of this post - my G68 is at Meridian's repairstation!
After I changed the old power supply with no success - it must have suffered even other parts of the electronics in the total loss of power supply.
I think in knowing that I was not an isolated case, that it is high time to replace this power supply with a better solution. My M-sound system is working in an over 250-year wooden house - like the smelt and how the printed circuit board and the surroundings inside the G68 looked, had since quite a fire may occur.
Now I am hoping for a obliging repair of that damage and I am glad to now a completely new power supply variant is used - that gives me much more confidence!

In the meantime, I changed to a M 861v4 - this sounds a little better (hard to say without comparison) - for the home theater the G68 with the real 7.1, however, was the better solution. When it is repaired - the G68 will then sound for my second living place.

Stepping away from the warranty matter; has anyone actually tried one of these power supplies?

First impressions for me are that this is a good move and exciting for current G series owners.

Kind regards
David

It appears the process for G61 Linear PSU installation is more complex than in G68 and consequently Meridian require all G61 back to the factory for them to undertake the upgrade in-house.

Labour and shipping cost for the G61 will be £228, making the total price for G61 upgraded £728 assuming you take the G61 into your Premium Partner and collect it from them afterwards.
You would need to discuss any additional charges your dealer may make to collect and re-install it from your home directly with your dealer.

G68 can also be returned to Meridian in a similar manner and cost if you prefer, but your dealer may also offer to install the PSU into the G68 themselves. Please discuss this cost directly with your dealer.

The Russ Andrews catalogue for Winter 2015/6 offers the service for both G68s and G61/G61Rs at £688 (plus an additional £14 for collection).

I contacted a PP and was told all G6x units had to be returned to Meridian but that the price was £500, not including collection and delivery.

So we have a range of choices.

Most importantly, some feedback on any SQ improvement would be welcome.

I had the LPS installed in my G68XXD last month. Total cost was $1400.00, including a recalibration of my room. Sound is very similar to the switching supply, but maybe a little cleaner in the mid and high frequencies. Really hard to tell though, because I had no issues with the original unit. In any case, the sound is magnificent - particularly with good sources, (Blu-Ray discs, etc.)

The switching supply is a little larger than a pack of cigarettes. The new linear supply is much BIGGER - the toroidal transformer alone is probably 3" in diameter and sits vertically, which may be why the G61/65 cabinet is a tighter fit.
