OK so it begins. 1st question regarding COMMS. It seems from the picture, the 511 patch panel is just a fan out from one to four with no active circuitry, is that correct? Seems strange that you can only master/slave a pair for the comms since all the speakers have in/out connections. Could someone explain why you need the centralized patch instead of just daisy chaining all five speakers?

You can daisy chain the comms. The digital can only be sent to pairs such as front sides or rears. The slave patch is convenient in that it is more of a "star" network.

Just in case another newbie is reading here, I was confused on the suggestion of using 75 Ohm coax for the COMMs since they use a 5 pin DIN connector as I incorrectly assumed the 5 pins were needed! Now I see that coax works just fine thanks to the pin out shown on this site.

The reality of master and slave comms cables (M5 and S5) is that anything with two conductors will work; The cable I used to use was picked more for its mechanical properties than its electrical; nice and flexible!

Three conductors are shown for C5 comms, but it will work over just two.

El cheapo CCTV hookup wire works as comms cable for me. £5 for 20m.

Just out of interest, does anyone know of a decent thin shotgun cable (75ohm coax on one barrel, anything on the other) that they can recommend for M and S leads? Does anyone know the brand that M use themselves?

A decent quality S-Video cable might do the job.

Good thinking. Something like Belden 1807A - approximately 3mm dia x 2 (in shotgun format) at $0.85 per foot? Anyone see any problems with this?

These Liberty (Meridian M-LEAD and S-LEAD) adapters allow you to easily make custom length comms cables using readily available RG-59 cable. Simply terminate a BNC connector on both ends and you are done. No soldering, no wire diagrams or pin outs. It doesn't get any easier.
