If you were coming to Meridian today for the first time, would you pick Sooloos over Roon? Knowing that Roon will support all of M's endpoint?

If Sooloos core now has no sales value (in that it is free) then M sell network end zones and DSP Speakers. This is actually what they are very good at. It doesn't matter whether they are driven by Sooloos or Roon.
Roon isn't free but then it also isn't tied only to QNAP. So, we have choices.
Cost of entry into high quality networked streaming players is now extremely low.
I would like to think HQ see it this way also and they release standalone firmware updater, improvements to zone player network capabilities etc. ... recognising their customers could use either front end core.

There is not a simple answer to these questions. The MC200 is a nice compact "one and done" device that will satisfy most people's needs for high quality music. Using the zones feature in their receivers will allow them to get the music in more than one room if they desire. Roon would be overkill in this situation.
If a person has endpoints from other manufacturers and wants to add a Meridian endpoint, then Roon may be their only answer in order to protect their previous investments.
Meridian and Roon have just opened up a wide range of choices that will allow a customer to create their ideal system.
Pure speculation, but given that the screen looks exactly like the C15 interface, Touch:PC is most likely derived from the same code which, itself, may not have been designed to support arbitrary resolutions.

The 8 by 3 Album Grid [which is a good compromise IMHO] plus surrounding control elements are obviously hard coded to a 16:9 AR [Aspect Ratio]
Likewise, it seems like the app is designed to work with no bottom Task bar or Top Menu bar... and as Rick says, it seems designed to run as a dedicated Sooloos Control UI... minimising access to other apps on the PC.
Changing it to display on e.g. a 16:10 1920 by 1200 display would require dynamic altering of the Album Grid... which is likely something they didn't want.
Does make me wonder about the claim about though that it will work on the Microsoft Surface devices... which only have a 3:2 Aspect Ratio... i.e. much "squarer" than the widescreen image above [1.5 v 1.78]
We have two of the newer Surface Pro 3's in our office with the 3:2 aspect ratio. Changing the resolution from native to 1920 by 1080 results in a thin letterboxing effect. Otherwise the screen is still quite sharp.
If the Surface Pro 4 to be announced October 6 has a rumored 14 inch screen option, the letterboxing would not be too bad at all.
Rumors are the Surface Pro 4 will be significantly thinner with a smaller bezel and no fan. Might be a really good option.
BTW, the Surface Pro 2 can be had cheaply and has a native resolution of 1920 by 1080.
Mwiebelhaus, the Surface 2 has only 2GB RAM. Do you think it would still work as a dedicated control, even though the minimum requirement is listed as 4GB?
Anyone aware of a pad that meets the hardware specs but uses wireless charging like the HP TouchPads (which don't look to have the right graphics aspect ratio unless you purchase an overspecified powerful unit)?
Seems to me in a residential setting, that would be a pretty slick capability vs. the standard laptop charging that a Surface offers. And I say that as a Surface aficianado with multiple units deployed in a work setting.
Take that capability with vMSR ported for Windows and you have a pretty nice device to support your Meridian kit.
