I recently cobbled together a (used) digital system with a 568.1 controlling a pair of DSP33s and analog surrounds and sub, no center.

The volume control works fine in all calibration processes, whether by remote or front panel. The DSP33s both respond perfectly in these calibration routines, with volume precisely controlled. Therefore, I believe the wiring is correct.

However, when in a normal listening mode, like "Cable", using any DSP setting, the DSPs don't respond to volume changes. The analog speakers DO respond to the volume changes.

I've tried re-typing the system, and re-calibrating, but without solving the problem. Oddly, the system worked for a couple of weeks when first set up, but is not now working properly. Any suggestions?

As far as I recall, the volume changing in calibration does not prove that the Comms is connected correctly. The volume change is done directly in the SPDIF signal.

So to me it sounds like your Comms cabling is suspect.

Can you detail how it's wired up?

Thanks for the information. The cabling is as follows:

- new M5 lead (from Ian Fraser) from 568 to left DSP33 inputs (switch set to left)
- new S5 lead (also from Ian) from left DSP33 comms and digital outputs to right DSP33 inputs (switch set to right)
- C5 lead from 568 to HD421 (this works fine when source on 568 switched)

The DSP33s are stuck at some intermediate volume (approx 50). Oddly, they seemed to respond to volume changes a couple of weeks back. The problem appeared first as a sort of "stepped" response, where the volume would jump after the volume was increased or decreased by 10 or more steps. It worsened such that response would be even more intermittent, requiring larger and larger volume moves on the 568 to get any change on the DSPs. The analog surrounds and sub always responded normally. Now, the DSPs don't respond at all to volume changes and remain at 50 or so. They sound great, by the way!

Have you power-cycled the DSP33s?

Yes, I repeatedly power cycled the DSP33s.

Have you set one of the DSPs to be master using the legacy config programme?

Could you have swapped the speakers or wiring around at any point?

If you haven't try pressing "clear" on the MSR whilst in stand-by. This sets the controller.

Make sure MSR is set to a Meridian source.

I used to have similar problems if the system had been powered off whilst away on holiday for instance. This was the answer for me. Hope it helps.

I have tried pressing "clear" on the MSR while in stand-by. And I have the same volume non-response issues whether I use the volume controls on the 568 OR the remote.

Have powered on/off all components repeatedly.

Am wondering if the 568 is malfunctioning.

Reset the D33s with a reset plug?

I don't have the reset plug. Is there a way to find or make one?
