@Altus : Is that the Great Wall of China you're referring to, or The Alright Wall of China ? smirk

Neither, actually, but there are many useful allegories in the Pilkington video. I was actually referring to the Chinese walls that are meant to exist in the City but which are sometimes observed in the breech. I don't think the Great Wall of Huntingdon is like that at all. There is very effective segregation between Meridian and MQA Ltd, although a few people do wear more than one hat.

Hi Matt,
As MQA streaming is compatible with existing [non-MQA] equipment, why would it add any unreliability?

Carl

Presumably it will need a 24bit DAC to play in undecoded form?

Take a count of everybody currently successfully using Tidal with no dropouts.

Now double the minimum required sustained bandwidth. (i.e. break the 'C' bit of FLAC so the stream now takes the same amount of bandwidth as a redbook version)

Take a new count of problem free users, will the numbers be the same?

(Excluding Data caps/costs as well as throttling trigger levels)

Matt.

Hmm. Never had dropout issues with Tidal. If this is a thing it's obviously a YMMV situation.

Yet Bob said in the CES Q&A (or was it privately?) that MQA was completely compatible with DSP presets...

I didn't think the follow up posts were too bad - much better than some sites, and Lavorna has attempted to answer a lot of pertinent questions (for those that want to understand the technicalities).

There does seem to be demand for an MQA decoder that outputs something in the digital domain that can be read "more or less in full fat unfolded format" by a non-MQA compatible DAC (ie improving on the undecoded MQA "better than CD option"). A number of posts on this forum support that idea for use with legacy processors. There must be a fairly sizeable market for such a product. Do we think MQA Ltd have relented on this point?

You could be correct Altus but I think the limitation will be the music IP owners since a semi decoded digital MQA signal could then be stored and freely distributed.

A "better than red book CD" digital copy is pretty good for no additional DAC investment and those that have invested in non-MQA DACs still have ordinary hi res and CD to listen too.
