MQA or not, changing the fundamental sampling multiple doesn't sound right. From the technical description of MQA, the core is essentially pre-apodized PCM, so a 44k core will play back as 44k, and a 48k core will play back as 48k (in the absence of MQA decoding, of course).

We've had this communication from Meridian.

This new software will supersede the current software in your MQA compatible product and will be required to enable the decode of the official MQA content soon to be publicly released by vendors such as 2L, Hi-Res Audio and TIDAL.
So it does appear that a firmware update will be required before any current 'MQA Compatible' Meridian equipment will actually play MQA material (in MQA mode)

So the MQA compatible product is not actually MQA compatible without an upgrade that makes the MQA compatible product MQA compatible.

Brilliant.

To be fair, MQA limited / Meridian Audio have previously said that the firmware of MQA compatible devices would need to be updated once the commercial specification of MQA was finalised and published.

Though I appreciate that unless one is following closely, that point could easily be have been missed.

The good news is that it's coming.

Agreed for the Explorer and Prime but not the 818v3. This was touted as not needing an update to play MQA fully. The announcement that all devices would require an update was only made on 23/12 (and missed by many, myself included). Hey, it's not a big deal, but IMHO it would have better if the first commercial release of MQA material could actually be played on the inventor's equipment upon launch.

Note also that the 44k layer of MQA is not upsampled to 88k by the 818v3 - presumably because the non-upsampled version sounds better. Thoughts?

Still wanting an A-B comparison to hear the effect of MQA versus a hi-res recording (if ever it will be possible).

I was tempted to criticise those complaining about the 818v3 but then spotted this in the

I would still just love M to provide a clear indicator of the entry route into MQA for the likes of me with my MD600, MS600, MS200 and DSP5200SL. An 818v3 and upgrade to DSP5200SE is not realistically on the cards.

As Meridian have had this working and in place for some time I envisage it will merely require a recompile, test and then release.

Can't see this taking very long at all.

I purchased a track which even without MQA sounds very good.

Yes very frustrating, I recently purchased some 5200SE and I'm now in limbo land waiting to see what will or will not be MQA compatible. I'd like to buy an MS600 but will it work...

I do not see any benefit in withholding basic compatibility information to those who have at the end of the day supported the Meridian brand and therefore helped fund the development of MQA!

The current MS600 will not handle MQA, nor will the MS200. Your best bet is to wait until the new products are announced. It is known with some degree of certainty that there will be a replacement for the MS200 that will be MQA compatible and my guess is that there will also be a replacement for the MS600 in due course. I have no idea on timing.

Hector, it's sunny outside. Time to take Golden Ears for a walk and get rid of some of that "bah, humbug".
