Good Day

I am based in Cape Town, South Africa and have recently bought a second hand pair of Meridian DSP5500 speakers. It needed some TLC and I have it up and running again. I have found some 24/96 boards which I have fitted and now need the firmware for it.

Is it possible that somebody here could assist me please? Thanks.

Chatting to Rodney Gold, he suggested I need the 5.4; 7 segment,5500 24/96 firmware.

As an aside, the agents in our country has changed hands a few years ago, and you could deal directly with Meridian in those years before the hand over, now that is not possible and there is very little assistance, parts, etc for legacy equipment anymore. It is an uphill battle. I have owned 3 Meridian CD players, tuner and DSP5000 speakers.

It certainly reminds me of Dave Hall at Meridian, now that guy was fast and a real gentleman too. It certainly seems like the guys here are like that too.Thanks in advance for all the kind assistance and help I will be receiving.

PROBLEM NO.2 :

I fitted the DAC boards and left the music on overnight, listened for a few minutes earlier and noticed that on one of the speakers both bass drivers were not producing any sound, the tops and mids yes.

I removed the board and put back the old one and all the drivers perform well.The "red capped" works perfectly, the "blue capped" one does not.

I took a pic of the two boards and notice that they are the same, but different. Any advice/comments?

Welcome on board.

You should "register" your equipment in your signature, so it's easy to respond.
Regarding your cards make for each card a better high resolution picture and put in the gallery. You can check now the EPROM look at the printed label.

Did you retype each speakers two times before you tried it?
What about soldering?
Do you check the connectors?
What about the power amps?

There are printed label somewhere on the power amps that telling you the serial numbers of the electronic-not of the firmware.

Play both speakers in mono if you have a processor or setup both speakers as left or right so both speakers have the same signal.

Be careful with the screws, some are screwed in to the chassis/wood, so do not over tighten or unnecessary mounting.

Reinstall the new firmware before you do some hardware, it could be that you have to do it 2 or 3 times.

Thanks Robert for all the suggestions. I have followed through on probably all your suggestions and have taken the necessary care through all the steps.

As I indicated earlier, I put the old boards back and the speaker works fine, so the board certainly has a problem.

I will take some better pics and post it later.

Also, I am still on the lookout for v5.40 firmware please if anybody can assist. Thanks.

Is there anyone that has a schematic/circuit diagram of the 5500 PCB COM Board, please?

I am trying to assess why I have no output on the two bass drivers i.e. only output on the tweeter and midrange on the one speaker.

The older boards work 100%.

As you speak about the power output, and that means ALL chassis on one speaker don't work?

Does the speaker wake up - out of standby- or not when you test it?
Do you type it as a master or not?

The comms board is the little board where the comms cable and digital audio get connected.

It react to the MSR/processor commands like switch the DSP on or off, volume...

The second thing is that the SPDIF signal get transferred to the processor board via the flat cable what is shown in your pictures what you posted in that thread.

Robert, thanks. You are giving some things to think about and therefore, some options I need to explore. Let me first explain the setup process :

1. The older boards on both speakers worked 100%;
2. The newer boards fitted, no sound but power on;
3. Software loaded on Master speaker and on switch on/power up, both speakers play music;
4. I then check that all drivers are working and not that on the Slave speaker there is sound from the tweeter and midrange, however nothing from the bass drivers;
5. I removed the "new" board from the Slave speaker and replace it with the older one, power up the system again and everything is in order, i.e. ALL the drivers are playing music. That lead me to the conclusion that the board is faulty.
6. I replaced all the cables with brand new ones, digital and comms.
7. I have owned and lived a set of DSP5000's with 3 Meridian CD players for many years so do understand how the the communications and digital connections work ( just for clarity ).

Considerations :
1. I did not "Flash" the Slave and should try that?
2. Maybe, the Flash Upload is not complete or done correctly. [ I do notice that the display on the Master speaker does not give all the information I previously had, so suspect?]3.
3. Unfortunately, the current agent is 1500kms away and shows no interest in Legacy equipment and are only interested in replacing any faulty equipment, no interest in servicing and very difficult to get information/assistance from.

Please, if there is anything else I need to consider any help/ guidelines will be appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, flash the new firmware and type it as a master first to test all functions.
If you have crazy failure, retyping or reload the firmware can/could help.

Yes, you should reload as strongly suggested just to exclude that this could be the failure.

Are you also checked the colored cable in the left upper corner on your pictures, be careful and look under the flexible shrink tubes (where the cable are soldered to the PCB)?
That cable runs to the power amps, maybe the amps get no signal as the cable is interrupted?
Are the label on both boards are the same on the IC, special that long one on the right front corner? It is a EPROM it think?

Report back what is going on.

I will reflash/flash both speakers again and do as you suggest. I will also check the cable connections. I have checked the labels on both boards and they are the same.
