Each BBC prom is being live streamed in 4.0 from the Royal Albert Hall, this is available here

We've got this set up as a test system in our showroom by connecting a laptop to an 861v8 with HD621 and HDMI. Depending on the laptop there is likely to be a bit of playing around to get it working properly. You can use the test media to check you are up and running.

We have four M6 loudspeakers connected - the test signal is great, it really captures the acoustics of this huge venue.

The proms will be streamed live every evening (and a few afternoons) from now until 12th September, if you are interested in coming to listen let me know and we will see if we can put a date in the diary. Here's the link to the full programme

Why wouldn't they use dolby digital instead of reinventing the wheel?

From a post on the sursound list about last years Proms surround streaming experiment by Rupert Brun, head of technology, BBC Radio.

"Some people have commented that we should make a "normal" surround sound stream available but I'm not at all sure what they mean by this. For live streaming you need a codec and a transport layer. Our "normal" transport layers Flash and Shoutcast. Flash won't support more than stereo, Shoutcast can but support for this is very limited. MPEG-DASH, on the other hand, is rapidly becoming the standard way to transport streaming media over IP with more and more companies supporting it.

If anybody would like to set up a demonstration of live streaming of surround content which will play natively in a browser using different technologies then please let me know. I'm not using MPEG-DASH to be difficult, I'm using it because we have figured out how to make it carry good quality surround sound reliably and play in the browser without third party plug-ins, and because it is an agreed standard which is widely supported. If any of you have a better way of doing that please share it!"

Hmm. Front left and right are okay, but rear right is silent and rear left plays rear right! Yet the speaker mappings seem fine in the audio MIDI settings.

Ideas?

I'll take a look tomorrow it's likely to be the HDMI card settings, we had an option for Quadrophonic which worked correctly with the 861 set to THX.

To get our system working here we went through these steps on the laptop to set the audio to 4CH mode and then as Justin said we ran the 861 in THX mode.

Thanks Adam. I'm using a Mac and going into my Radiance VP rather than the HD621 direct, but that has given me some pointers and thoughts.

The Radiance passes back the audio EDID from the HD621, so that shouldn't be the problem. I wonder if I need to set the quadraphonic settings in audio MIDI, then RECONNECT the HDMI cable to reset? Will try this evening.

I tried this on my old-ish MacBook Pro mid 2010 with a HDMI adapter - I couldn't get it to work - 2 front channels, left rear appeared in front channels, right rear on left rear.

Using the Audio MIDI setup I couldn't seem to change the settings to fix it. Has anyone with a Mac laptop get this to work?

By the way, don't click on the speaker in the Midi app, it generates a lot of noise.

I was going to bring my Mac Book Pro in but forgot this morning.
