I still have some problems identifying the read out of the G68 and 598 combi.

Yesterday with a movie there was no AC3 3/2.1 in the display (meaning DD) but there was a MOVIE6 MHR 48K readout, am I correct to assume this means it gets a real MC input PCM with upsampling ?

I would hate to find out I listen to a matrixed version of DD.

I really hate the absence of a DD or DTS icon or readout.

When I use a LD I do see DTS 3/2.1 or AC3 3/2.1 but on the 598 Movie6 MHR.

Could someone please assist ?

Greetings,
Frank

Frank,
You can check by using the 598's own on-screen display. If you're using an MSR+ its either the Blue OSD button or else Shift+OSD at the the same time, I think.

Movie6 means that 6-channel is coming in from the 598. K = upsampling. k = Not upsampling.

If you see Movie2, then 2-channel is coming in and it may be matrix decoded.

Thanks Stacey I allready thought that but wanted it confirmed.

To be honest it's really annoying you can't see a logo of DD or DTS lighting up, don't ask me why, but the DSP's of M are so good that I could be fooled in listingen to a DSP instead of DD.

I happened to me once that I listened half a movie on the PCM track (older DVD [Linked Image from softronix.com]), without really noticing it, UNTILL I changed it to DD5.1.

But the Movie6 readout is ok offcourse also ;D.

Frank

@Meridialien.

On the 598 it's also shown as DD 5.1, but that's the selection of the track, I wanted to know what happens after that, because the unit does the decoding, but can also output 2 channel on the 5.1 track.

This is so vague if you don't know 100% sure what the readouts mean, the manual is clear about this but not 100%.
And if I pay that much for a setup as a customer I want to know for 100% to what I'm listening.
I would be a big problem if I install this incorrect at a customers house [Linked Image from softronix.com].

Frank

"Movie6 MHR" means that the player is decoding the Dolby Digital (or DTS) stream and sending it, multichannel, to the G68 with MHR encryption.

You get "DTS 3/2.1" or "AC3 3/2.1" on the G68 from laserdisc because the laserdisc player does not decode the bitstream internally. The G68 gets the bitstream and decodes it for your listening pleasure.

The particular display on the G68 you mention is telling you the audio format that is arriving at the G68, after any decoding that has happened upstream in the player. Worry not, you are listening to full six channel audio decoded from the Dolby Digital stream on the disc. The fact that it is decoded in the player and delivered to the G68 already in multichannel frees up DSP power in the G68 to do snazzy things like upsampling.

Oooh, forgot to mention. If the player is delivering a 2 channel downmix to the G68, the G68 will report "Movie2" on this display, ie. it's a Movie preset and there are 2 channels of audio on the input wires.

Simon.

This might be a license issue. The G68 is not actually decoding DD or DTS when using Movie6 or Music6. If you select PLIIx Mov6, then there might be a Dolby logo. [Linked Image from softronix.com]

Will try that out.

By the way what is the prefered listing mode ?
At the moment I listen to Cinema, because Discrete is dumping everything in my rears instead of all 4 surrounds, and I don't know how to correct that (tried everything). And DPLIIX movie sounds a bit to artificial for my taste, however I just watched one movie.

AND MAN DO I LOVE THE SOUND COMPARED TO THE 568.2 [Linked Image from softronix.com].

So when I'm watching a DVD with either DD or DTS soundtrack selected, and the G68 processing using 'Cinema', how do I know what the stream is?

Is it processing DD or DTS, or using its own DSP?

I would like to know what it's doing, and what I'm listening to.

Pete

Hi,
As I understand at the moment if you see MHR 6 channel comming in 48K (big K) than you know it's using the stream you want (taking into account you selected the DTS or DD offcourse).
When you see 2 channels comming in than you know something is wrong.

Frank

Confusing for an average user, or the wife!

Surely, a DD or DTS 'text' not even logo, if copyright is an issue would be useful.

Why is a symbol needed ? It plays everything you throw in in (not SACD) and if yu have checked that it works why care what the display tells you ?

I have the ame ting in my 800 combo, and although that one has a light for DD and DTS i never feel the need to know that i really have selected and hear DD and DTS.
That seems like wearing a belt and suspenders (scene from Once upon a time in the West)
