JayZ offering a "large sum" plus an "equity stake" in Tidal... as well as Double the standard Streaming Royalty Rates My understanding from reports elsewhere is that you get double the royalty rates if you give Tidal money in the form of an investment. Not sure if that is what you mean.

What I was saying is that there is plenty of evidence that Jay-z is just the front man here. First, several of the artists here are represented by Jay-Z's label Roc Nation. So it makes me question how many are truly owners in the traditional sense. Second, the primary driver of the Roc Nation investment into Tidal came from someone who was a principal in KKR, one of the largest private equity firms in the world. I am aware that several of KKR's team members were at last night's launch, suggesting there is more than a casual relationship. So all the investments and aggressive tactics to secure hi rez content coming from a more corporate side. Makes me happy as it was looking like Tidal was going to turn into a soley urban/pop portal, given who they paraded out onto stage. I feel this isn't as much the case, with a little more balance in the ownership structure.
But yes, this appears to be all about the money!

I'd imagine that the details on any deals between Tidal and the Artists are quite sketchy at best, and who knows if we will ever find out the "real deal"
What I read in two different articles last night was that an Artist stood to benefit in 3 distinct ways from signing up to this particular initiative
a) a "large sum" initially
b) an equity stake in Tidal.......likely "options" for the future
c) Double the Streaming Royalty Rates for Tracks streamed from the Tidal Lossless / Hifi service.......and "standard" Streaming Royalty Rates for Tracks streamed from the regular Tidal "Premium" 320kbps service
If this is true, then it's easy to see the attraction to Artists who feel like they have been "stolen" from by Spotify et al over the last several years
As regards the Artists "greed" referred to earlier, one would have to wonder about the "greed" shown by those who expect music for free
It's ironic to contrast the 'young' with the 'old'......to those of us used to paying e.g. 15 for an album for many years, the prospect of having an 'infinite' library for 20 a month seems like a great deal......while to the 15 to 30 year olds who have grown up in the era of free music via downloads, the prospect of having to pay 20 per month is usually met with "why the hell should I have to pay that [or even anything at all]??"

Financial Times article from last night about the new Tidal re-launch... fairly definitive details about the advantages & inducements for the Artists. Choose to post the Article, as some here may not have a subscription. Jay Z enlists top acts to promote new streaming service
NEW YORK, NY - MARCH 30: (L-R) Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Deadmau5, Kanye West, JAY Z, and J. Cole onstage at the Tidal launch event #TIDALforALL at Skylight at Moynihan Station on March 30, 2015 in New York City. (Photo by Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images for Roc Nation)Getty
Jay Z has enlisted some of musics biggest names as equity partners in his new streaming music service, offering stock and cash in exchange for promotional and marketing support from artists including Madonna and Kanye West. At least 15 artists were named on Monday as co-owners of Tidal, the streaming service acquired by Jay Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, via his recent $56m acquisition of Aspiro, a Swedish music company.
The size of the cash advances and equity portions given to the participating stars is unclear but at least one act was offered as much as $3m and a 3 per cent stake in the new service, according to one manager familiar with the discussions. Tidal declined to comment on the ownership of the company.
The deals with top recording stars do not include rights to music, which are held by the large labels that represent them, said people familiar with the matter.
The structure of Mr Carters company, and his eagerness to include top talent in its ownership, has clear echoes of the artist-owned model established by United Artists, the Hollywood studio set up in 1919 by stars including Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford.
We have joined in Tidal for the preservation of an industry and to deliver music and experiences in a way that is best for the consumer, said Alicia Keys, one of the parade of celebrity owners, along with Daft Punk and Beyonc, Mr Carters wife, who appeared on stage together in New York on Monday to announce Tidals relaunch.
The event was trailed with a splashy social media campaign with acts including Coldplay, Rihanna and Arcade Fire promoting the new service using Twitter hashtags.
The move comes as music streaming enters a new, highly competitive phase. Googles YouTube and Apple are both aggressively courting music labels and artists as they bring subscription services to market this year. Paid streaming services generated $800m in revenue for labels in 2014, eclipsing CD sales, and are closing in on downloads as musics largest source of revenue in the US, the worlds biggest market.
Spotify, the market leader in streaming, is on track for an initial public offering, having recently hired Goldman Sachs to lead a $500m fundraising that would give the company a provisional valuation of about $8bn.
Spotify has 15m paying customers with 60m people using its free service. However, its growth has come at a cost, with tensions starting to appear in its relationships with top stars and music labels over the free, ad-supported tier. Taylor Swift recently pulled her catalogue from Spotify after the company refused to remove her work from the free service. Universal Music Group, the worlds largest music company, is also in dispute with Spotify and is pressing the Swedish company to modify the free service perhaps by capping the amount of time it can be used, to accelerate the conversion to higher margin, paid subscriptions.
Tidal does not have a free tier and is targeting audiophiles with a $19.99 a month service that allows users to stream tracks in high-definition. It is introducing a standard definition tier for $9.99 a month, in line with the pricing of rivals including Spotify. Ms Keys on Monday said the revamped service would include exclusive experiences for subscribers.
Apples new streaming service, which it will launch this summer, will also not have a free tier. The company acquired the service when it bought Beats Electronics, the audio group founded by the hip-hop star Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine, last year for $3bn.

Hmm. Today's new playlists have a distinct "owner" feel about them. Jason Aldean, deadmau5, Usher, Jack White, Jay Z, Beyonc. All "exclusives". And Madge is the first new album. Fair enough for the moment, but I was rather enjoying the apparently impartial curation.

While others have noted that Meridian owners get links to streaming TIDAL content, but are not able to downloaded the content itself, I haven't seen any thoughts about why Meridian hasn't secured the right to enable its systems (with storage, of course) do actually download, as an "offline" device. Such devices, for example, iFruits, are able to download content. Subscribers are able to simultaneously stream content on one device, and play offline, downloaded content on up to three additional devices.

Hi,
As I understand it, Tidal only allow downloading for online play to portable devices.
Of course things can change if there is enough motivation.

This will be a requirement enforced by the Record Companies, who are paranoid about file copying from PC Hard Drives.
I.E. It's not a Tidal or Meridian decision per se.
File Cacheing is not allowed in the desktop apps of the other music services either... Except surreptitiously by Spotify, who then use your local cache to "serve" other Spotify users nearby, with the files themselves being Encrypted.

As I understand it, Tidal only allow downloading for online play to portable devices. Does anyone know whether it is planned to allow MQA music to be downloaded onto a Sooloos server? I seem to remember a reference being made somewhere early on about the resolution of downloaded MQA music being 24/96 (might even have been Bob himself) which seemed to imply that MQA music could be downloaded if bought separately rather than just streamed (rather like Qobuz permits at the moment with hi res purchases).
