Can someone please verify that the Meridian 586 can do DTS. It states it can on there manual but I read in the (Meridian Closed) board that it does not pass through DTS? I bought one and had it send in for service and cleaning within 2 days of getting it. I did compare it directly with my Cal Audio 2500 and both my brother and I picked it in a blind listening test as havning better sound.. Now I have to mention that this is a 586 version 1 I think and not the 586.2.

The reason I am posting is that if that is the case I wonder if Meridian would upgrade it so it plays DTS .(for a fee of course) Is this doable?

I assume you mean 568?

It decodes DTS, yes.

Why would you need it to pass through a DTS signal??

The 586 was meridians first DVD player. Not sure if it decodes dts or not though.

If you look at the Meridian web site under "Library" and then "Matrix", you'll find that the data sheet and other info is still listed for the 586. The data sheet says that the 586 does do DTS

Snappy, I'm a bit confused. As Phil H said, the 586 is a DVD player. I don't believe there was a .1 or .2 version of it. The 568 is a processor and there are .1 and .2 versions of that. Which do you mean?

Indeed. I am talking about the DVD player. I heard mention that there are two different versions of the 586 DVD player. But I cant find any info on Meridian's site that suggest this. and as you know the Meridian site is not all there when it comes to support (search don't even work). Thank goodness the agents in Atlanta is up to par. I also read the (586h.pdf) file that the 586 DVD player has provision for DTS. So I assume it can do DTS. Man I am just about ready to tell Meridian I will redo there site for free.

There were two versions of the 586 ( the second being the .2) I believe the difference was that the .2 did DTS and the original didn't. I'm not sure if the original could be upgraded but as I recall I don't think it was because I think there were some other improvements in the .2 edition besides a simple DTS upgrade. Check with Meridian on the full story. As you may recall the first 800 DVD also did not do DTS and that was about the same time as the first 586. I hope for your sake it can be upgraded. JOE

My recollection is that the difference between the .1 and .2 is that the .2 used a different transport because the previous one had been discontinued. A quick call to Meridian-Atlanta should resolve the issue.

Upon reading this thread, I went out to my theater to see if my 586 (.1 version) would pass a DTS signal. When I put a DTS music disc in, my 568.1 locked on a DTS signal and the display read DTS Music. However, when I placed a DTS movie track in the 586, the processor locked on Trifield and was silent. I cannot explain why it would read a DTS music disc but not a movie track.

I believe that this is because the DVD player could not interpret the DTS flag. I think the 586 used a Toshiba transport.

Martin.
