SET UP...

I use two SPL-R 1200 Velodyne subs hooked up through Velodyne's own SMS-1 Digital Subwoofer Management System which in itself in connected to the .1 (LFE) channel out of the G65.

The way the set up is connected, I only get the subs to work or produce deep bass only when a .1/LFE signal is sent out of the G65 which is fine for movies or music (DVDA) that have .1/LFE encoding.

However when listening to a CD or non .1/LFE encoded material I do not get deep bass from my subs (in fact they don't play at all).

Question...

Is there an alternative way to hook up my subs to the system so as to get deep bass from them all the time regardless or the source and regardless of it having a .1/LFE encoded material?

Setting you speakers to small and setting your desired X-Over point should send everything below the frequency you set as well as the .1 to the sub.

But why would I want my main speakers to be set to small when they are 5200s?

If you still recommend setting the 5200s to small at what point or what frequency value would you set its crossover at?

I have a pair of HSU analogue subs with an Anti Mode Dual Core. I have my 5k2s set to small and crossed over at 80Hz. I arrived at that setting after starting at 40Hz and working my way up. The system sounds great on both movies and music, including Trifield. I think until you get to 7ks and larger you need to get the smaller speakers, including 5k2s, out of the lower bass area.

Because they don't have the bass response that you require. Setting them as 'small' in the config enables the bass management to redirect some of the bass towards the sub(s). However, I guess you know this re your second question.
Try 80Hz for movies and 40Hz for music, but this is a starting place you will have to experiment till you get the sound balance you desire.

As you have two subs, if the SMS-1 D allows, you might wish to consider setting them up as a stereo pair rather than 'twin' mono, as this can yield better results.

If I set the main L + R speakers to "small" then I cannot according to the book set my sides and rears to "large" which IMO is not what I want or require from my system.

Carl let me pick your brain here because I'm not getting anywhere anymore with configuring the system!

So my 3 fronts are non SLs but I am using two AC12s to wire them into the system, my two rear are SLs and I intend to use EBA with them (so again I don't think I want the rears to be set to "small").

Also I'm using my sides analogue outputs L + R split in two by a Y connector (so two right and two left channels) to run 4 tactile sound transducers in a stereo configuration. Because of this I think the sides should be set to "large" to get all the low frequencies to the transducers because they want the lows to shake things up. Additionally I would like the sides to get only 100 Hertz and lower sent to them, is there a way to do this?

The advantage of running the tactile sound transducers with the analogue outputs is that I can control their volume separately from the rest of the system, meaning at night when I don't want to rock the whole house, I can play the main system at lower volume levels and yet increase the sides/transducer volume so as to get still the full impact of the vibrations.

Now on the speaker "Types" available to us according to the G65 book, do you concur with me seeing the equipment I have that "Type 2" is the one I want (all digital)? If not which one would suite me better?

On the "Sub" issue I obviously using the "analogue sub output" to the SMS-1. However because of this should I be telling the G65 during the config that I am using two subs or only one sub because the SMS-1 as a digital processor is now the one controlling both subs in the system (I selected one sub)? This said if I use the G65's room correction how does the fact that only one sub was selected affect the room correction program when there are really two subs in the room?

I hope you see what I am up against here. I have so many more questions but I'll start with the ones above because I'm not getting anywhere at this time!

I have spent some time tonight experimenting using Mconfig and you system setup. Cutting to the chase, you can't do what you wish.

My only suggestion, would be to re-configure for just one mono sub in the configuration and then hang your 2 subs and the 4 tactile transducers of that single output.

If the SMS1 allows, then set up Mconfig for a pair of subs and hang one sub and two transducers of each channel.

You've not mentioned using Mconfig, if you have not used it, may I suggest downloading and having a play with it. The bass management allows one to visualise the redirected base as one switches around the options.

Note: If you really want lots have bass, try the "bass heavy" setting.

I do not have Mconfig but will try to get it.

Once I have it I'll experiment with it an see what gives me the best solution.

Now that I've played around with the "Wizard" I'm afraid I messed up something.

I only get sound from the centre channel when I play the 602 and if I go into the test tone to calibrate the speakers only my sides/transducers and my subs produce a tone, all other remain silent!

I guess I'm just not made to set up a Meridian system. I guess I'll have to ask my tech to come back and reset the system and take it from there.

5200s don't deserve a large setting at all. Also why don't you swap your rear (SL) speaker for front (non-SL)? I agree there should be no major sonic difference but still

For HT- best to have flat / (80/100 Hz) across the board, and calibrate your subs carefully.

Until I get another single 5200 or another pair of SLs, I'm leaving the non-SLs upfront because I want to implement EBA on them.

I do not want the main L+R to be speakers with EBA and the centre (most important for movie viewing with 75-80% of the info) to be a non-SL speaker with no EBA.

I have started to test the system and plan on trying multiple version of the set up to see what sounds best in regards to the size of the speakers to be used and at what point I will use the xover for the subs.
