Is there a internal cooling fan in my 861v4? It seems to be extremely hot on sides. Just recently noticed enough to inquire.Runs hot even in standby but really gets my attention when in use. I have owned this unit 8 yrs. Would appreciate any input.. Thanks

Hello,

I had the same problem. It was very hot and then my power supply failed. I bought a new unit from Rick last year but it was in the print. Today I got my unit back with a complete rebuild power print. Now it is not hot anymore.

Regards Ronald

Air circulation is key. I keep my 861v2 on a shelf in the closet with other equipment. If the weather is warm / house is warm and I keep the door to the closet closed the unit will get quite warm / hot even in standby. If I crack the door open and allow for some airflow the unit does not get warm at all. The closet holds an amplifier, DVR, and PS4 all of which generate some heat.

Seeems fine when I put a fan in front of it. The 861 is in a rack and limited to space. Any luck with circulation fans pulling air across unit? possibly give it a bit more rack room by dropping shelf and adding fan. Any further thoughts?

Did you send the unit in for new power supply?

I don't follow terminology "in the print". Could you please help me with that?

Also if the power supply is failing is it still available from Meridian and any idea as to cost?

Thanks for response,
Larry

If you look at pictures at Meridian-audio.info you can see the power supply of the 800 series. You can see a little box and a printplate (hope it is called like this).

The box was replace by me with a new one, but the print wasn't replaced. The problem of failing was in that print (on the side of the unit). That has been rebuild completely for many years of service.

The cost is hard to say. My dealer has rebuild it himself. I have a very good bounding with my dealer here in The Netherlands so it was not to expensive.

I have a rack mounted version of the 861 sitting on top of a G series active rack. I programed one of the triggers of the 861 to turn on the fans built into the active rack. The 861 and G active racks are ver similar with the 861 being taller. You could also get something like this fan system if your equipment is out of ear shot. As a side note I believe Meridian intentionally designs the case to be used to disperse internal heat as a heat sync. Because of this it is normal for it to be warm. Obviously the warmer the ambient temperature the warmer the case will be.

Very helpfull. Thank you. I already have fans on my amplifier rack. So I will try that route to see if I can get more milage out of my 861 power supply. Am I hearing that the power supply is in a failing state and I should expect problems soon?I believe the power supply was replaced in 2006 when I sent it in to be upgraded from V.2 to V4. Also seems I have seen in these threads that M power supplys have had issues . Any truth?? Thanks again for your help and concern.
