Hi,

My Evolve HTPC has died (an expensive mistake as the company has gone bust) and a change in finances means I am looking to replace it with a media streamer.

From what I have read all these support HD audio bitsreaming but not decoding to LPCM (with the possible exception of the older Dune models ?).

Does anyone know if it's possible to use the HDMI input on the newer Oppo Bluray players to decode HD audio ? The specs seem to say no but some forums say that they can accept them.

If this is possible it may justify upgrading from my BDP-80 grin

Has anyone tried this solution for their Meridian system ?

Thanks

Justin

from my investigations (Oppo 93 owner) the 103 HDMI input will decode DD+ but not TrueHD or DTSHDMA . I would be overjoyed to hear that it decodes the rest and would buy one immediately if it did.

It is my understanding from the manual that the HDMI audio inputs on the Oppo unit accept the following audio formats only:

HDMI Audio: up to 5.1ch/192kHz or 7.1ch/96kHz PCM,
Dolby Digital,
Dolby Digital Plus,
DTS,
AAC.

Thanks,

That's what I had read too but just wondered if anyone had tried it.

Would be great if it did but looks like I'll have to put up with lossy DTS for a while.

Does anyone have any other solutions to this problem or ideas ?

Cheers,

Justin

When you look at the bitrate of the lossy DTS vs the DTSMA there is usually very little difference. The DTS lossy core is 1.5Mb/sec compared to the 2-4Mb/s variable rate of the DTSMA.

Thanks, it would seem that the decoding via the HDMI input is not possible frown

However on further reading it seems that MKV playback is possible from NAS drives with HD audio decoding on the Oppo but the interface is a bit clunky. I think I will use the Mede8er for general family viewing (they are not as fussy as me) and get the Oppo and use its netwok playback abilities when I wnat to hear the full HD audio.

It seems I may have found enough of an excuse to justify the upgrade !

Cheers,

Justin

if you are already making MKV's with MakeMKV, you can go into advanced mode and rip to FLAC, 5.1 or 7.1, which converts the HD soundtracks to multichannel FLAC audio, which my Dune D1 and Base3D both playback fine on my Marantz and Meridian 861v6.

If you could rip a BD with a HD soundtrack using the FLAC profile, and let me know if the Mede8er plays back the 5.1 FLAC using MKV I would appreciate it.

I'm hopeful that my method of ripping is now future proof as HD audio soundtracks are converted to FLAC 5.1/7.1 and do not rely on the media player licensing advanced codecs or Meridian adding the bitstream support to their processor.

Of course, this breaks support for Atmos, so I can't really call it "future proof".

Thanks for the info, the Mede8er has arrived (BDP103 on the way).

I will give ripping the HD audio to FLAC 5.1 a try & let you know how the Mede8er copes.

Cheers

Justin

thanks Justin for the update - since FLAC compression is lossless it *might* actually pass the Atmos soundtrack but of course I don't know as I don't own a Atmos capable processor yet.

Good to hear that the other brand of media player could potentially play my MKV rips as well..
