I have Music-2-channel configured in MConfig as Trifield for the default. This works when I use the optical output from my Mac to play 2 channel CD's.
However, when I output LPCM from my Oppo into the HD621 and then to my 861 I only get direct, ambisonic, THX, etc. as choices and not Trifield or Stereo as choices when I play the same CD.
What am I missing here? What settings do I need to change to enable Trifield?
M have DSP presets for Music-2Ch, Music-MCh, Cinema-2Ch and Cinema-MCh sources. Dependent on what the M processor "sees" from the incoming datastream, you get then the choice to selct one group.
Take a look in MCconfig under preset or similar and you will that.
In your case the stream on your optical input from your Mac is a Music-2CH stream therefore you have the choice for Music-2Ch presets like Trifield, Music, Stereo...
When playing a CD on the Oppo the stream is "seen" as a Movie-2Ch? source. That's as far as I remember, there was some posts about that-have no Oppo and HD621, sorry.
On the Oppo 105D all outputs are live so you can send via coax too.
I have tested switching between coax and HDMI to see difference - but usually not much if any.
If you additionally set up the coax into the 861 try that? Also look at audio settings on the Oppo maybe but they are not complicated so the problem does probably not lie there - but with the Meridian (as usual).

Wow! Another ill informed, unsubstantiated throw away criticism of Meridian, based it appears on an unwillingness to read the manual and learn or pay some one who knows what they are doing to carry out the configuration.
You have to study the audio managment architecture in the processor to know what it will do with any given sound source. Then it just makes perfect simple sense. All this information is available on Duncan's Meridian info site.
Meridian is NOT plug and play but it is logical once you understand things.
Enjoy, Chris
No 18 in the Hall of fame I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best: GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 210/ 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone
Hoping to get thread back on course. I still have not received any info to answer my post. I changed movie II default to Trifield but it still isn't showing as a choice on the 861. I have re-read the manual. Two channel CD should have this as an option.
Does anyone know what the 861 uses to determine if incoming signal is a movie or music? How does this relate to the Oppo as input source?
A thought, and I hope this is not a red herring, as I don't have an 861 or Oppo...
When I want to change the default DSP on my G68 (via the front panel) it is necessary to select and store the new default while the source is playing. It is also necessary to make the change for all possible digital formats from the source, i.e. one needs to select and store the chosen DSPs individually for DD5.1, DTS, DD2.0 and PCM signals.
I wonder if your problem is that you have set the DSP for DD2.0 and not PCM?
In the spirit of Spinaltap, I would like to confirm that I am not involved in the corrupt theft of a global sport.
When a Meridian source is used the source sends down metadata via the SmartLink. However, when the source is not Meridian it has to deduce (best guess) whether it's a MUSIC or MOVIE source.
I don't have an Oppo but I'll test with a PS3 via HD621 to see what results I get when spinning a CD in it.
When playing a CD in the Oppo can you cycle the display on the 861 and let us know what each display is showing. Then we can compare notes.
Also if you wish send me your .msl file and I'll give it a quick once over.
Not answering you question I know, but for CD in the Oppo better AQ can be found by using the Coax output thus bypassing the HDMI/HD621 altogether. (By using a different MSR source to select coax input).

If I use coax out will SACD DSD material be degraded due to copy protection issues without HDMI?
I will send config file but even if I set defaults improperly shouldn't I get more choices than Cinema, Ambisonic, THX, and Discrete when I press the DSP button on the front of the 861? Trifield or Stereo are not even choices.

Yes. Pretty much the only piece of kit that can output SACD digitally without copy protection is a PlayStation hack, I believe. Even then it has to be an older model that is now, strangely, very much in demand.
Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.
I suspect that the Oppo is outputting six channels worth, even though only two are utilised for signal (i.e. all six are 'live'). That's why the HD621 and 861 are giving you the normal multichannel DSP options.
I'll check if the Vanity modified Oppo 93 behaves the same way. I think in the Oppo menus you need to select either multichannel or stereo for LPCM output over HDMI, and if that's the case it could explain the behaviour.
