It seems that one of my MD600 3TB drives has died frown

Would some-one be kind enough to confirm if this device is what I should purchase?

TIA

FWIW - I've had problems with the WD RED 3TB Drives. While it wasn't in a Meridian Product it was in a RAID Enclosure.
The drives would unmount and remounting would be problematic.

I've also had problem with the drives (3 of them) in a stand alone bay trying to use the drives as back ups.

Gianni,

For what it's worth I run two of the WD 3TB REDs in my MD600 (RAID 1), and an additional five of them in my Drobo 5N NAS. They have been in for nearly a year without issues.

Backblaze - hard drive reliability - Sep 2014 - use as you feel fit. Also worth a read especially the bit on reliability per size.

The WD 3TB Red drives in general are highly appropriate for software RAID (ZFS and Linux RAID such as MD600). Their factory went through a bad patch (last year I think?) when the RED drives were mistakenly loaded with WD Green firmware, which *may* introduce reliability problems and premature aging with software RAID schemes. The firmware can be patched though it requires a Linux machine and some software or booting into DOS on a Windows architecture machine. PM me if you want more information about this.

I purchased two of the drives referenced in my post above, one as a spare.

Thanks to Hector's patient advice I worked out how to exchange an HDD and summoned up the courage to swap over the replacement.

Power off on the front panel.

Power off on the rear panel.

Old HDD out.

New HDD in (the connector pin layout at the right rear viewed from behind differed from the old drive but it went in sweetly).

Power on rear panel.

Power on front panel.

Boots up.

Now have lights 4 and 5 flashing BUT they are in synch and not alternating.

Just checked debug and no drives are showing. Control:Web shows no albums frown

Any thoughts as to whether everything is OK?

Update:

Thanks to Russ I am now up and running.

Installing one new disk alongside the old one failed to initiate the clone, it timed out over night leaving lights 4 and 5 on - reason unknown. confused

Installing two new disks succesfully initiated the "knightrider" disk format process and restored full storage capability. cool

For reasons yet to be determined, I then could not get a new formatted disk to synch with the old one - odd. But reinstalling a "failed" old disk got everyting going again, albeit possibly temporarily. crazy
