I have a G91 feeding a pair of D6000s with DSP3100 centre. I am keen to add Bluray and SACD abilities to my system and the Oppo 105 seems ideal. Will I be able to feed the digital output of Oppo into the G91? Will I retain Trifield etc capabilities of G91 using digital input from the Oppo?

The 105 won't output the full SACD resolution over SPDIF digital due to copyright issues. You could either get a Vanity board for the Oppo or use the analogue input for that.

Also you can't get multi-channel hirez from a Bluray into the G61 as single SPDIF doesn't have the bandwidth. This would require an HD621 and multichannel input, but the core audio ought to work fine.

Trifield will be fine, since this is done entirely in the Meridian.

Any reason for choosing the 105 over the 103. The money saved could be put towards a Vanity board.

The only way to connect an Oppo to a G91 is by SPDIF or optical. The G91 has no multi digital or multi analogue inputs. An HD621 won't work either.

I used optical and it was fine with Trifield.

Eventually though I bought a Vanity board for the Oppo and a G61 for it's multi digital in. Very nice now and my Sooloos is way better too. The G61 has more oomph.

Is there not a D-sub 15 on a G91 as per the 568.2mm version that allows multichannel digital in?

Pretty sure that's an output for a processor downstream.

Unfortunately, an omission that would have turned the G91 into a great all in one unit.

I guess the G91 was a source and processor in itself. Bluray hadn't started so there was no advantage in plugging anything into it via multi digital.

Thanks to everyone who has responded. I was amazed at the range and depth of info provided. Your input has allowed me to focus a bit more on what I want viz. to be able to get best audio quality from SACD in stereo/Trifield. Bluray is a nice bonus but I am much less interested in absolute quality of Bluray sound/image (I only rarely watch DVDs on G91 or Bluray using a nasty Toshiba player).

I cannot afford to upgrade my G91 and Vanity HD would more than double the price of the Oppo 105 here in Australia - so would an Oppo 103 with Vanity Lite give me what I need?

As noted above, the G91 will not accept a full resolution signal for SACD. That said, if you obtain a processor which can take the full resolution signal out from the Oppo as PCM, either the 103 or 105 will work, with the 105 supplying a better DAC for analog output at double the price. If the digital output is all you are concerned about, the 103 should offer the same performance.

Just to confirm what others on here have said. The Oppo 103 will connect into your G91 via a single digital cable (either SPDIF or optical). This will allow you to send audio to the G91 in either 2 channel PCM or vanilla DTS/DD. You cannot send HD audio over this single lead. The G91 processor does not have the ability to receive an HD audio signal as it does not have a multichannel SPDIF or MHR input. This means that the Vanity card will not be able to connect to your G91.

To use the Vanity card, you will need to change your processor. The Vanity card would partially take the place of a Meridian HD621. The HD621 will take out the HD audio from an HDMI input and then send it into a Meridian processor that can accept a multichannel input (568.2mm, G61, G68, 861). The HD621 will do that for any HDMI input connected into it whilst the Vanity card will only do it for the Oppo.

The G91 will process the audio received from the Oppo in the same way as its internal DVDA drive, i.e. you will have the same DSP settings (Trifield etc.) as you currently have.

Personally, I would start with the 103 going into the G91 and see how you like the sound, then when or if if you feel the need to upgrade, add a different processor and then consider either the Vanity card or the HD621. The G91 does have a Multichannel Digital Out so this can be connected into the new processor. The G91 can also be used for video switching and upscaling in this configuration.
