The regional Sales manager for Meridian America, Ryan Donaher, got in touch and let me know that if any Hitchhiker wants to attend or has any technical questions for a deep dive, then you (the HH'er) can email him.

I can't/won't post his email address here but if you PM me, I will send you his work email via PM.

I can't make it there next week. I'll be enjoying live music courtesy of my son's high school jazz band. I don't have too many of those left so the decision is easy. I hope you all have a great time.

Regards,
Bill

I'd like to try to make the event tomorrow (Thursday) if it's not too late.

Can anyone PM me the appropriate contact info?

Thanks!

I went last night to the M event and it was interesting. Funny that everyone in my demo had M hardware but not DSP's... I have no basis of comparing whether SE's are better. I think they sounded good, but if they are a massive upgrade to standards, I won't be rushing out to get the standard versions.

I hope they use the same demo music/movies for demonstration purposes. Here is the demo list from this event.

1) Track one of Saving Mr. Banks Soundtrack track - Chim Chim Cher-ee (East Wind)
2) Track two of Ella And Louis - Isn't This A Lovely Day?
3) lady gaga - ??? They all sound the same...
4) Star trek In To Darkness opening sequence

I think the most thrilling sound came from Louis after an opening my Ella. In direct two channel, was certainly the sweet spot of the speaker for me.

I will put together the sample list and run it through my speakers and see how they compare.

Big thanks to M for including me and providing an entertaining and informative evening.

In the listening room, it was 8000SE and 7200HSE up front and the 7200SE in the rear. There was a set of 5200SE's in the main area, but I didn't listen to those.

A lot of discussion over what the upgrade over the new got you, so what did the clamp do for you. The guy giving the demo from M put the tweeter and EBA as the biggest upgrades, followed by the clamp.

This side of the pond we have a phrase "damning with faint praise"; this would seem to qualify!

Over here we have loads of guys who are thrilled by the SEs. I'd be really interested to hear what you felt was "good" and what was (seemingly) "so-so".

Do tell.

This was my first encounter with DSPs. I found there wasn't enough time to decide whether DSPs are for me. I would have loved to have heard the 7200SE or 5200SE in two channel but Perhaps that wasn't the point of the event. Otherwise very impressive to hear the 8000SEs shake the room. In addition to the list Yetis provided, I'd add that the Lady Gaga track was in Trifield and I also heard Get Lucky off the Daft Punk album in Trifield.

I'm very disappointed.

I was looking forward to attending this, early this afternoon sent the contact at the NYC Meridian Hut a note requesting the go-ahead to show up, and...

Crickets.

A few hours later I tried following up with a phone call to HQ, and just got a voicemail box. Left a message and... still crickets.

Sigh. While I realize it would have been far better if I'd handled this days ago, so I guess I brought this disappointment on myself... [edit: some further whining removed]

UPDATE:

Okay, apparently the contact at Meridian wasn't actually ignoring his email. I just (many hours later) got an odd email bounce message:

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the server for the recipient domain Meridian-america.com by spool.mail.gandi.net. [217.70.184.6].

The error that the other server returned was:
554 5.7.1 <[email address redacted]@meridian-america.com>: Relay access denied

Odd. I'm still disappointed, but not feeling quite as cranky.

In this environment, even OK speakers sound great. So when I hear the latest generation, top of the line $80k speakers in the same environment, I want to be blown away, and I was not. It was good. Now, I really did like the 861 Direct Ella \ Armstrong set, that was pretty spectacular as Armstrong comes on. (Looking forward to getting my new 861 and ID41 set up, to list to that again!)

While it is fun to watch movies, I think I am more critical and demanding of my speakers when I am not watching something that is distracting my sense of sound. So I would have prefered an audio only test with no Lady Gaga.

When I get all setup I will run the same demo on my setup and see how it goes. I can pretty much replicate all but the sound room and of course the speakers.
