My advice right now is to order a UMIK1 from minidsp and measure the room using REW .. this will cost you 70 eu for the mic and nothing for REW.
REW will show you 2 things , the decay of various frequencies in your room and imbalances in those freq levels.
If you have long decays or imbalances in the 250hz+ range , you need physical treatment - diffusers and absorbers , the bass can be corrected electronically.

You can also use those results to build filters for MRC.
I can assure you that getting bass right at your listening position will improve EVERYTHING.
Between MRC , the median speakers bass control and the corner/wall/free positioning DSP, you CAN get it right.

Did someone say "They're all the same, objectively"? I think they did; it could even have been me.

In terms of the original question, has anyone compared the lower end of Sooloos (e.g., MC200+MS200) against one of the older disc spinners which would have cost a similar amount in their day (e.g., 508.24/ 598, etc)? Just a thought...

I never enjoyed the sound of CD; just could not put my finger on why but I just can't concentrate on the music. My last player was/is a 596. I found the MC200 to be vastly superior; just relaxed and easy to listen to. YMMV

That�s a rather sweeping indictment against CD replay . If the music is good enough, it takes a lot of defects to prevent me getting totally immersed in it. I must confess I�ve yet to hear a Sooloos system however.

Shaun on here recently bought an MC200 / MS200 combo & said that it sounded quite a bit better than his old CD player which was a G06 from memory.

This is great advice, and only blows about 5% of your budget. You can tweak now and can be used more in depth later after you've rebuilt.

After 4.5 years(!) since I bought my calibrated mic from Cross Spectrum Labs I finally found time last night to measure the response of my room and play with positioning. I found that by moving the sub 3ft I had a much smoother response with no nulls under 250Hz (at the previous position REW measured two at around 150 and 200). It took just 90 minutes to significantly improve my system.

With the UMIK1 you don't even need a mixer/phantom power and a soundcard anymore. Just plug it in via USB. If your laptop has digital out (I'm using HDMI to quickly switch which speaker I'm measuring for) you are good to go.

My previous stereo setup consisted of a MC200 and 598 into my DSP 5200's. Before purchase my PP loaned an MC200 so I could carry out AB tests. Both produced excellent results, in blind listening tests some tracks better on the MC200, others the 598! So the flexibility of Sooloos was the winning feature at the time. Then the MS600 appeared and that was the game changer in terms of sound quality MC200 verses 598, a real gem in the M lineup.
