I had previously played with Trifield out of my CD player into my 861 and compared it to Stereo. Trifield distributed the sound out of my front L/R/Center speakers. Today I hook up my Macbook Pro (thanks guys) and play 2 channel music in Trifield and I have five channel sound.
Looking in my 861 manual it has a chart describing Trifield DSP parameters that talks of rear channels yet the paragraph before doesn't mention rears at all:
As for the Music DSP preset, the Trifield preset extracts the mono and surround components of the original recording. It then calculates the signals for the front, left, centre, and right speakers, using the phase and amplitude differences between the three front channels, to redistribute the sounds on a frequency-dependent basis.
What is the norm for Trifield? Why would I have rear info playing now and not previously? It is enveloping although the bass appears a bit hot.

I would get used to it for a while then you will find plenty to tweak. Center depth seems very important to get right, the sound stage snaps into focus when it right. The rears should sonically disappear on most material, but you would notice if they were not there. Very subtle but effective. Care calibrating in the first place always pays off, then it's down to your personal preference. Enjoy, Chris
No 18 in the Hall of fame I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best: GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 210/ 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone

The effect of Trifield is quite program dependent. Some recordings will yield next to nothing from the rears, yet others can sound like a genuine multichannel recording.
Cheers

Agree in full with Mr Meridian, very program dependent.
It can easily vary from track to track. It does take some time to adjust, and I found a compromise eventually!
