It was once suggested to me that you should not buy disks from the same batch to make an array as a fault could then manifest itself across multiple drives at the same time. You have all your eggs in one basket.
The same could be said (perhaps with decreasing returns) for 'same model' and then 'same manufacturer'. These things play out over such a long time, and you won't have long term reliability data for a disk before it is too late (you've either bought it, or the model has changed).
Does anyone else have Meridian-based tips for disk diversification as a risk-mitigation strategy against data loss? either in QNAP NAS or M-kit itself (TwinStores with two different drives in, for example?)
BackBlaze Hard Drive Reliability Update Sep 2014. To confirm, these are not 'enterprise drives' but, further down the page, in "Should we switch to enterprise drives?" section, the failure rate of enterprise vs 'consumer' was similar and if there was any difference, the consumer drive would be slightly more reliable.

Dominic, I have one in my QNAP paired with a 2TB. It replaced a 2TB which threw some errors. I was planning a second 3TB to replace the other, perfectly good, 2TB to expand my NAS to a 3TB total. But I shall probably pause a while longer before doing so.
