Hi Carl.

Thanks for that.

How on earth are you meant to configure them without a Meridian remote if they're not supplied with one?

You'll get one "free" with your 818.

The number of people who run Meridian speakers without any Meridian processor or source must be tiny. I'm sure many Meridian users now have two (as I do) as a result of the earlier policy of including them with DSP speakers.

Patience!

You did get MSR with older speakers and with some other kit, hence all the additional ones ended up on eBay!

Meridian now only supply as standard a MSR+ with their controllers, this prevents over supply for folk purchasing complete systems (I recall being awash with 4 MSR's with my 500, 5000 HT system).

If you had only purchased a pair of 7K2's, your dealer would have made sure you had a remote shipped as well.

It seems the issue here is not what is supplied, but perhaps the stagger deliver.
When is the rest of your kit due?

Did you order any SpeakerLink cables for you new system? (They are not include as standard either).

Regards,
Carl

PS I'm assuming this is all coming as one order from a dealer.

The speakers are exDemo from Peter Tyson, arranged through the Meridian Sales guy there.
He might have mentioned that I needed some extras. He was certainly keen to take my money! That was debited from my account on 23rd Dec - speakers arrived today!

The other kit was purchased from Dynky and was recently listed in the for sale on this site. It's arriving from Europe so who knows when it will arrive.

Guess I will just have to keep peaking inside the box and admiring how beautiful they look!

Is SpeakerLink cable normal cat5 cable?

Yes Cat5 screened shielded is quite sufficient.

Nope, 'standard' cat 5 is unshielded twisted pair (UTP), which makes it susceptible interference. However, if needs must it can be used for a temporary lash up.

Meridian SpeakerLink cable comes in two forms:

- Flat Cat 5e (shielded) available in certain made up lengths.
- Round Cat 7 (shielded & screened), made up by dealers to custom lengths as required.

Meridian state that these two cables have been tested and selected for there superior sonic qualities.

There has been lots of discuss re Meridian SpeakerLink vs others, try a Google Search of this site for some background reading.

On my system I played is safe and used Meridian SpeakerLink cable for my front speakers, but the two rears are cabled with 3rd party (shielded & screened) cable.

Whilst you are waiting for the rest of you system to arrive, may I suggest you download the Meridian configuration PC program and the user guides ... Then have a go at adding and configuring your system into to it.

Then when the kit arrives, you can download the config and get going sooner. A heads up Meridian is not plug and play, it needs to be configured and to do this one needs to understand it well.

Happy reading, it's well worth the effort.

Regards,
Carl

Thanks Carl.

I have downloaded and read all the manuals that I can find online. I have also installed the configuration program and made a preliminary setup on it (not that user friendly as far as software goes!).

I will read them again as I think I will have quite a wait for the rest of my gear.

I will also look at getting some cable made up.

Careful. A bit of confusing/incorrect terminology is being used in above posts.

SHIELDED cable is where individual twisted pairs are insulated

SCREENED cable is where the whole outer cable is insulated

You can get SCREENED and SHIELDED where the individual pairs are insulated and the whole cable is insulated.

Speakerlink should be SHIELDED cable at minimum as this prevents cross talk within the cable.

Unfortunately the mnemonic designation of the cable is equally confusing so always double check. But shielded cable is typically stamped STP. Wikipedia has a table summary of permutations and different designations.

The good news is that cable is easy to check. The RJ45 plugs should have metal outers and cable will be stamped, normally with STP (or variation) or shielded somewhere on the outer.
