Hello,

I've recently acquired a G57 PA and when I plug it in the unit humms audibly, not through the speakers but the unit itself, but after playing for a short time the humming stops, is this normal for this amp?

Many thanks
Chris

Both my 559 and 558.2 power amps hum. It's annoying but you get used to it.

Thanks Phil, I was hoping it was not a fault.

It is a fault, just not evidence of incipient failure.

There were a few threads on humming 557s a while ago for which it may be worth googling the site.

This for instance: 557 with noisy torroid.

My 558.2 has made a humming noise since it was new. It does not do it all the time and my 559 does not do it all the time.

It seems related to the quality of the mains.

I leave mine plugged in on standby when not being used and that is when I notice the hum.

I have four of them in use and my guests slept in the room with them over Xmas. I had to turn them all off as they complained they sounded like a swarm of bees! It not a problem in use because the room is large with plenty of soft furnishings, carpet etc. A room with a hard wood or tiled floor will make them sound louder.

Also, the bolt that holds the transfomer underneath the amp is about the same size as the feet so that the bolt touches the furniture, annoyingly damaging it. This can make the humming or vibrating worse. Putting something under each foot is the solution and this also improves ventilation around the unit, which have cut out before due to heat, mainly in the summer.
